Of the great multitude of jazz singers around today, two immediately stand out. These are Dianne Reeves who goes someway to filling the void left by Ella and Sass by her stellar singing of the standards and the more earthy and sensual Cassnadra Wilson. A couple of the latters earlier Blue Notes ("New moon daughter" and "Belly of the sun") deserve to be in any collection and are true classics. But like the earlier tribute to Miles Davis, this is a little uneven, the original compositions being better than the material previously recorded by the likes of Abbey Lincoln. ("If loving you is wrong" being, perhaps, her best effort at song writing.) That said, I love the Muddy Water's track (a change from the usual Robert Johnson number that usually adorn her albums.)
However, this is a record that still gets frequently played on the CD player in my car and an average record by Cassandra is still better that some of the more hyped-up efforts of her contemporaries. Newcomers to her work should check out her earlier efforts first.

Cassandra Wilson is without doubt the most original and interesting female jazz/blues vocalists of modern times.

While others perform excellent ballads and standards in a modern setting, they draw heavily on past influences (I'm thinking of Diana Krall, for example.) Cassandra Wilson is doing something all of her own - dragging in delta blues, african and other ancestral musics that are clearly important and relevant to her conceptions.

Beautifully recorded in mostly detailed acoustic settings, this album is the first recorded with a new producer/guitarist Fabrizio Sotti, though her previous musical director Brandon Ross is still a contributor on around 50% of the album.

Thoroughly entertaining and moving from start to finish, the standout track for me is "If Loving You Is Wrong" - a delightfully affecting rendition.

Cassandra still has the greatest voice in contemporary jazz, but here she is let down a bit by the percussion arrangements. Her version of "If Loving You Is Wrong" is wonderful, but would have been even more so with a different backing music. By all means, by this record if you already like Cassandra - it's definitely quality music - but if you haven't listened to her before, start off with something like "New Moon Daughter".
