4.0 out of 5 stars UB40 Back to Best?, 7 Nov 2003
After being a UB40 fan for many years I was a little sceptical about the new album. I had felt for some time the jagged raw edge that made UB40 who they were in the early 80's had long gone and was replaced with a more mellow line that no longer seemed to excite and get the blood coursing through the veins. So I peeled off the shiny cellophane wrapper, opened the case, opened the drawer of my cd player and popped the cd in. I turned the Sub up a little and the amp a little bit more and pressed play.

I am pleased to say I was far from disappointed, although its not quite 'Food for Thought' or 'Don’t walk on the Grass' I do feel that they have retraced the steps that made them what they were back then. The Bass lines are suitably heavy, although a little synthesised at times and there is plenty of pronounced rhythmic strumming patterns throughout most of the tracks to keep your head nodding (and your eye's dem shuttin'). Of course there is the token love songs thrown in for good measure but the sweet and sickly side of love is not thrown in your face.

Although just a little tacky and commercial, even the “lets ride on the crest of the rugby world cup wave” inclusion of ‘Swing Low Sweet Chariot’ is stirring and really not too bad and really highlights what a fantastic and unique voice Ali has.

A healthy mix of political views, toasting from earl and astro and sceptical views on life all make for a good album that should have the fans reaching for the 'repeat play' button on their remote.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another UB classic, 30 Oct 2003
By John Bridgeman (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've had the pleasure of listening to this album prior to general release and must say it's another classic UB40 album sure to please the diehard fans. It's a return to the original dub sound of the eighties with So destructive getting the album underway in style. Other highlights include Drop on by, Young guns and the briliant Nothing without you which has a totally original sound. Much of the album has a similar feel to the 2001 album Cover up but this album is more consistent throughout. The only problem I have with the album is Swing low which seems a little out of place amongst the other tracks, it's just as if it's been chucked in at the end for good measure. However it's sure to be future classic UB album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Homegrown, 12 Oct 2003
By Dean Elliott "DNO" (Essex) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
23 years into their amazing career, UB40 return with possibly their best album to date. Homegrown consists of the ub40 reggae that the world has grown to know and love only this time they have added a darker, moodier feel to the dub infected songs. Ali Campbells vocals are as fantastic as ever as he brilliant sings through soon to be classic tracks such as So Destructive and Drop On By and the Official England World Cup song Swing Low ends the album on a brilliant high. A must for every ub40 fan, and anyone who'd like to hear their brand new vibe
