Amazon.co.uk Review

Billed as the role-playing game for people that didn't like role-playing games, the original Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance was a surprise smash in 2003; now the sequel, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II, is here to carry on the good fight--almost literally, as the last game ended on a bit of cliff-hanger with our heroes being menaced by the vampire king Mordoc.

Despite the Baldur's Gate name Dark Alliance II, with its real-time combat and simplified stats and rules, is more Gauntlet (or Diablo if you're too young to recognise that reference) than the Baldur's Gate PC games. This is not to imply that it's a simplistic button-basher, though; the combat is highly involved, with different styles of melee, distance and magic attacks depending on which character you choose to control. When you're not fighting (which isn't often) you can take part in those other stalwart features of the RPG genre, shopping and levelling up--both of which are made as easy and interesting as possible.

If you're wondering what has changed or been improved for the sequel, the simple answer is not much. Even the graphics seem the same and the few gameplay features that have been altered are entirely minor. To be fair, though, there wasn't much wrong with the original. --David Jenkins

Product Description

Darkness gathers yet again in the sprawling port city of Baldur's Gate. Bloodthirsty bandits stalk the trade roads and a secret society of heartless assassins dominates the criminal underworld, abducting citizens on moonless nights and dragging them screaming into the darkness. The city's most recent saviours vanished along with the Onyx Tower and so, in heroic tradition, adventurers throughout the Western Heartlands make the journey to Baldur's Gate to meet their great and unknown fate.

Embark on a new adventure in Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II and brave terrible dangers in search of fortune, glory and power. Face a multitude of sinister enemies while travelling through many spectacular environments in this action-packed fantasy game. Rid the lands of chaos, mastering skills, spells and deadly weapon. The fate of thousands hangs in the balance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic game, 27 Mar 2006
By L. Clyde "Rock n Roll RHCP!!" (Cumbria) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Looking at the previous reviews I was very surprised. Being a big fan of the first dark alliance game, I bought this as soon as came out; I wasn't disappointed either. The fact is, it may not have the same intelligence as the Final Fantasy series, but it does what it was made to do, and it does it well. It IS a 'hack and slash' with many fantastic aspects, such as; more characters, more Magic and weapons, more levels and enemies and much more attention to detail. With 5 characters holding different story lines that link together, this game will draw you in and keep you in for a long time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Fun and Entertaining, 18 Aug 2005
By A Customer
Addictive from the very beginning, this game takes off from where Dark Alliance I finished. Quite basic in it's design and options (there's only one correct path to take, and limited character interraction and the game is not far off of a platform format) it grips you and keeps hold.

Starting with elementary weapons and without armour, your chosen character enters a stage where accomplished missions and slain baddies earn you experience and gold. Experience is traded for new personal skills and gold is traded for weapons and armour upgrades for when your soft skills won't work with an enemy.

Naturally this game has it's ultimate mission, as with the 1st Baldur's Gate, to kill the tough guy at the end, but with better graphics, more complex characters, it just adds more onto the first attempt by Acclaim. Baldur's Gate II is addictive mostly by the willingness to buy that next weapons upgrade to see the damage and to see what the higher spell will do when you've gained that bit more experience from seeing to another enemy.

The limited interraction, and single method of winning, are only slight disadvantages to what is game to be enjoyed by all ages.

Why are 30 year olds like us writing reviews, and wishing secretly for a further improved 3rd game to come out in the future? I'll have to get back to Dungeons and Dragons on the board and playing with my Rubik's cube while I wait.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb 2 player adventure, 11 Feb 2004
I can honestly say that I have never looked forward to the release of anything quite so much as I have looked forward to the release of BGDA2, so much so that I was a little worried that I would have such high expectations that in the end I would be disapointed when I played it. This concern was however completely unfounded, BGDA 2 is definately a worthy successor to the original Dark Alliance title and my girlfriend and I are now having hours of fun hacking and slashing our way through the 80 or so levels that makes up BGDA 2.

While the game is certainly fun for one player, it is in the two player co-op mode that this game really shines and stands head and shoulders above all other PS2 games. BGDA was the game that got my girlfriend interested in gaming and we played the game through several times without tiring, BGDA2 offers even longer play and even more re-play value with more characters and quests. The graphics have a lovelly polish and the sound provides great atmosphere, all in all a slick and well made game.

This is a game I would highly recommend especially to those with a partner that they want to play alongside, it is simple to pick up and play but has sufficent depth through the character customisation to keep you playing for a good deal of time. Its great fun and very addictive - So basically its good bye to the TV for a few weeks.
