Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Preview

Just in case you didn't know, the Tony Hawk's series is the best skateboarding sim ever--and now, with the release of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4, even more so. As many of you young hipsters may be aware, skateboarding is taken far more seriously nowadays than any child of the 70s could ever imagine, with legions of baggily-trousered youths now able to refer to moves such as a "bluntside" or "overcrook" with a perfectly straight face. Indeed, the list of silly names for ridiculously dangerous stunts has been increased for this latest sequel, and you now have the added ability to skitch (hold onto the back of a moving car) and grind through traffic. Such minor additions aside, though, the big new change is the career mode, which now has specific goals and milestones for all the different skaters and really adds to the replayability.

Curiously, the graphics are still not particularly good, with the same slightly muddy, undefined, look to them that the developers presumably now think is all part of the fun. Thankfully, however, they have realised that having time limits for the levels was an unnecessary limitation and, except for a few specific missions, you've now got all the time in the world to graze your knees and cave in your skull. This is looking, as the kids on the street say, "sick". --David Jenkins

(This preview refers to the PS2 version and is based on an incomplete version of the game; features or problems mentioned above may not appear in the finished PSone game.)

5.0 out of 5 stars The best skate game yet on PSone, 18 Nov 2002
It came as a great suprise to see that this Fab game was coming out on PSone so of course, i bought it and so far i haven't been dissapointed. The graphics are good, the gameplay is good and it is a great game, especially if you like skating. This game beats THPS 1,2 and 3 because it is so good. If you enjoyed 1,2 and 3, you are going to faint when you play this game.

3.0 out of 5 stars Where did it all go wrong?, 2 Dec 2002
Its going to be difficult to convince anyone who's played the previous 3 incarnations of this game that there might be just a flaw in the new one. Its an even bigger task to convince you that this is one big flawed game.

After giving this a rigorous twenty four hours worth of play, the PsOne title doesn't seem that much different to Tony Hawk 3. Infact, it seems a rehash with just a few new levels and a few nice linking tricks to go with it. The tasks are less fun than the previous games, and there's little or NO interactivity with the scenery. Tasks can range from very easy to incredibly hard with no instruction of what they mean (the manual is little help) eg: 'Collect Combo without breaking your line.' I took it literally and still couldn't work out what it meant.

The usual clipping is in there, where your skater gets stuck in the scenery and even worse this time; when you're busting a trick - the game has a habit of making you reappear somewhere completely different to where you were eg: London level.

However, on reflection this is a solid game, nice learning curve for new comers to the genre, the level detail is better than the other 3 games and the two player and build your own parks are vastly improved! As for seasoned veterans, its a nice new challenge but just don't go expecting anything radically different.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tony's 4th, 17 Nov 2002
After playing all of the previous 3 titles in the series I was very excited when I heard that the fourth was out to buy!
I bought it for my PS One and started playing immediately.
The graphics are improved and the extended career mode is very interesting. All of the new levels and environments are very cool and on the whole the game is a suprised improvement on the previous versions, when i thought that Tony had reached his greatest level of gaming enjoyment in Tony Hawks 3, and thought that it would be impossible to improve upon. But once again he has raised his level of graphics, sounds and playing pleasure in the fourth part of his extremely groovy games!!!!!!
