Synopsis

Funnyman Weird Al Yankovic stars in this comedy as George Newman, a man who takes over a low-rent TV station won by his uncle in a poker game. Newman's unconventional methods for boosting ratings include giving the station's janitor his own children's program -- with spectacularly successful results. Complications ensue when the unscrupulous head of a rival network tries to drive Newman off the air, but there's still plenty of time out for fantasy music video segments and TV bits which showcase Yankovic's talents as a parodist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Conan the Librarian!!, 9 Jul 2003
By Onur Günduru (Turkey, Izmir) - See all my reviews
This review is from: U.H.F. [VHS] [1989] (VHS Tape)
A super, fantastic comedy. I watched this film almost 10 times but i still get the same taste. Everyone should see the TV classics (of U.H.F.) like 'Conan the Librarian' and 'The Spadovsky Show'. Also the 'spatula advertorial' will be a moment to remember. Some marvellous scenes include finding a marble in a sand pool with your mouth and drinking water from fire hose as the first prize!! This is a very sweet film between incredibly absurd films like Airplane, HotShots, Top Secret etc. and Chevy Chase type family comedy films.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Genius, 12 Feb 2006
This film is a classic in how comedy should be made. There's nothing offensive in it (not much) and it is filled to the brim with funny stuff.

You'll love Stanley Spadowski. You'll love the spoofing of countless other films.

But if you don't like stupid, senseless comedy, you'll hate it.

Just watch it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny, but patchy, 9 Jan 2004
I'd really like to give this about 3 1/2 stars; I don't quite feel it deserves four, but three isn't enough. There are a lot of funny moments, right from the start, and a few scenes of pure genius - and the plot is at least as coherent as most of the "serious" films to come out of Hollywood since. But somehow it doesn't all quite hang together as well as it should.... Maybe (as a fan of Al's for some years now) I was just expecting too much.

Final verdict? Worth it if you're a fan and can spare the money. If you're a perfectionist, you'll only upset yourself.

I used to watch this film as a kid in the early 90s. I bought it recently, and its even more funny than I remember. Non stop chaos! Nuts. Shame he didn't do any other films.
