Product Description

CD Description

Tell-all books and TV shows later explained that Culture Club was slowly imploding under the weight of intra-band tensions and Boy George's increasing drug addiction, but upon itsrelease in 1984, WAKING UP WITH THE HOUSE ON FIRE just sounded strained and odd. Listening to the album in hindsight, its charms are more apparent, and the discomfort of its creation is readily audible in the subtle tension of songs like "Dangerous Man" and the sweeping ballad "Mistake Number Three". George is in fine voice, and the band's playing is as smooth and relaxed as always, but there's no denying that the songwriting is uneven--the plainly imbecilic "The War Song" was a horrid choice for the first single--and there's an unsettling sense of listening to the psychic collapse of a once-promising talent. Waking up with the house on fire indeed...

5.0 out of 5 stars Fab!!, 26 April 2008
By Stutones "Stu" (North Wales.) - See all my reviews
OK OK, first of all i must say a big "SHUT UP" to all the critics who dissed this album when it was originally released 23/10/84. It is such a fantastic album and i am glad it's been included on the cd remaster. Could anybody sell as many records as Culture Club did the year previously to the release of this album. However, i guess they couldn't, obviously this album was gonna live in the shadows of Colour By Numbers, no matter how much or how little it sold. Sales for this album standed about 4.5million copies, which today i believe would be a feat for any musical artist. Stand out tracks are Mistake No.3 (a huge hit in the States),Medal Song (should have been Top 5),Don't Talk About It,Mannequin, Love Is Love / The Dream (both would have been No.1 if released), Love Is Love smacked everything else out of the way in Japan when it went to No.1 in Japan for ages. The War Song was robbed of the No.1 position as back in the day the charts were (fixed!!!), believe it or not that is a fact - as it peaked at No.2 behind Stevie Wonder "I Just Called To Say I Love You" - check out the sales of 7" singles between 11th October and 18th October 1984 and Culture Club were like 2,000 units ahead of the Stevie track. Also, this track should be included on Culture Club's hits compilations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Walking Up Before Going to Sleep, 17 Jan 2004
By A Customer
This album is indeed better than it has been described by the band the recent years. And it certainly deserves four stars!

"The War Song" was a huge hit back in 1984. "The Medal Song" came out in December 1984 and although selling pretty good (it could easily have been a top 10 hit today) it couldn't compete with the other singles released the same week "Last Christmas" and "Do They Know Its Christmas". The single stalled at #32 and Virgin Records panicked without reason.

To be honest, the album is a bit overproduced but most of the songs are pretty good. This new version includes the singles "Love is Love" (released in Europe besides UK, Japan, Canada) and "Don't Go Down That Street" (released in Japan). It also includes the brilliant "The Dream", which could have been a huge single hit at the time but for some reason was forgotten on the "Electric Dreams" soundtrack. Other great songs are "Mistake #3" (top 20 hit in the US), "The Dive" and "Unfortunate Thing".

The album sold around 4 million copies, which is good but nothing compared to the classic "Colour by Numbers", which sold more than 10 million. After "Waking Up With The House on Fire" the Culture Club fairytale turned into a nightmare. And the band needed 15 years to recover before they released a classic hit single again "I Just Wanna Be Loved".

4.0 out of 5 stars Wake up and buy this reissue!, 14 Sep 2003
By Antonio Pineda (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
After the big success and universal appeal of “Colour by Numbers”, this - Culture Club’s 1984 offering - was widely regarded as a disappointment. Certainly, a few of the songs (such as “Dangerous Man” and “Hello Goodbye”) had the “rushed” and “filler” sound to them but on the whole “Waking Up with the House on Fire” was not the total disaster Culture Club bashers made it out to be.

“The War Song”, “The Dive”, “Mannequin” and even the flop single “The Medal Song” are all worth a listen and “Mistake No. 3” is a standout track that begs to be numbered as one of Culture Club’s finest ballads. Why Virgin never released it as a single in the UK has always been a mystery to me.

The four extra tracks in this remastered version raise “Waking Up’s” value as a desirable addition to any 80s collection. “Love is Love” and “The Dream” (both featured in the movie “Electric Dreams”) are great pop songs – the former making it as a successful single in several countries. “La Cancion de Guerra” is essentially “The War Song” with a Spanish chorus and “Don’t Go Down that Street”, released as a single in Japan, also makes an appearance.
