Revisited Masterpiece, 22 Jul 2003
Arthur Lee, together with a great backing band, strings and brass, revisits his 1967 masterpiece at London's Royal Festival Hall some 35 years after its first release. With a wonderful sense of atmosphere, great musicianship and those astonishing songs, this is a moving, exhilarating experience. I recommend it unreservedly to fans of the original 'Forever Changes' album.

Arthur Lee's Swan Song, 19 May 2007
For those who were fans of Love and Arthur Lee in the sixties, and have heard some of his output since, and heard the reports of the state of his head and his time in jail, it was unimaginable that Arthur would ever do anything worthwhile again. Well, he's gone now (for those who don't know - he died of leukemia last year) but his last burst of energy amazed all. For 2 to 3 years he toured with a band and sometimes an orchestra with total professionalism, recreating his music for old and new fans. The band Baby Lemonade sublimated their own identity to back him and sounded nearly as good and sometimes better than the original Love. His voice was nearly as good as of old. This is a film of him with full orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall in London, recreating his one-off, off-the-wall, timeless masterpiece the "Forever Changes" album. This isn't just an oldie cashing in on the dvd boom, but a record of an almost miraculous return to form of a sixties legend. And it's unlikely from all accounts that the original Love would have had the professionalism to be able to work with an orchestra on a regular basis, so this is also a completely new thing, even if the arrangements are identical to the original.
The picture could have been better, and it's annoying that you have to play the bonus tracks one by one. But the really odd thing is that there are 2 versions of this dvd with different bonus tracks. Some say that the difference is between US and UK versions but I'm not so sure. One version (the better one in my opinion) has bonus tracks 7 & 7 is,My little red book, Signed DC(stunning harp solo), Stephanie knows who, and August(much better than the original from Four Sail). The other version has 7 & 7 is, Orange Skies, Listen to my song, She comes in colours, and Always see your face. Until there's a new dvd with all the rest of the footage from his tours( and I understand there's plenty) you need them both.
And there's also the hidden track. On either version of the dvd if you scroll to the 3rd bonus track, press right on your remote you will see Arthur's sunglasses change colour, then press enter and you get Singing Cowboy with Graham Coxon (Blur?) on guitar and a great contribution from the orchestra - this is one of the best things on it.Weird! Like everything about Arthur and Love.
And the sound is great by the way. To have this legend back at his best in your living room is not to be sneezed at. His like will never be there again. Treasure this.

Genius, 21 Jul 2003
If you are a fan of Love / Arthur Lee and didn't get to see any of the concerts - shame on you. From the opening bars of "Alone Again Or" to the closing of "You Set The Scene", this live album reminds you why Forever Changes is remembered as one of the best albums of all time. I have to say that hearing the band strike up for the first time playing the opening to "Alone Again Or", the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. Lees voice is mellower than once it was, the band is incredibly tight, the orchestration is gorgeous - the whole package is just criminally good. Disc 2, The encores; once again, excellent. The extras; what there is of them are splendid, especially the video of "Alone Again Or" - but there should be more, dammit. On the whole, the extras you get with this release are a little patchy - the screensaver is a bit weak, there should be more videos of the concert. Hell, if you're a Love aficionado, this is a must buy. Everybody else, go and buy the original album, listen to it and wonder why music doesn't sound like that anymore.
