Gaggia 74518 Burr Coffee Grinder Black

Gaggia 74518 Burr Coffee Grinder Black

Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The grinding of the beans is a critical moment in the preparation of a cup of true espresso. Ideally, it should be done just prior to the brewing of the coffee itself, and must be conducted with maximum uniformity and precision. For this the coffee grinder is essential: one has to be able to count on the accuracy of grind in relation to the particular coffee blend. The MACINACAFFE MM is more than capable of meeting such requirements. In addition, it is elegant in appearance and easy to maintain, and combines perfectly with all of the Gaggia coffee machines. Black or White.

2.0 out of 5 stars Grinds the beans fine but...., 5 Mar 2007
By Peter Clarke (cultural desert, ireland) - See all my reviews

This coffee grinder will grind coffee beans, which i suppose is why you buy it, but it scores very low on functionality and design, and for my £[...] I expected better.
The poor design means that you have to use both hands when griding the beans (one to depress the "grind" button and one to hold onto the grinder). The ground coffee is collected in a container which is oddly shaped with lots of nooks and crannies- this means that you can't pour the coffee directly out of the container into your expresso pot without spilling it everywhere, and b) even when you use a spoon to get the coffee out it is still awkward to do and you always have coffee left which you can't get out. It should also be noted that unless the ground coffee container is firmly held in place whilst grinding the coffee you will have some spillage.
I bought Gaggia because I thought it was the brand for quality coffee equipment, I will not be buying it again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good until it stopped working......., 13 Sep 2007
By A. Montgomery (Bristol, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've had my Gaggia grinder (this model is also called MM elsewhere I think) for just under 5 years. I have been using it to grind beans for my Gaggia classic manual espresso machine (I don't bother grinding fresh for use with cafetiere). For the correct texture for espresso, I had my one on the 3rd finest setting, though this might vary between grinders and what works best in your espresso machine.

For 4 years it worked perfectly, then one day just stopped grinding. The motor was working ok, but after contacting Gaggia UK (I'd give their website only about 4/10, and it feels like their customer service phone line only has 1 operator as it is impossible to get through) they suggested that the discs needed replacing. So I sent it off, along with £35 repair fee, and back it came after a couple of weeks. It then worked fine for a further 7-8 months, but now the same thing has happened again. Repairs are only covered by warranty for 6 months Gaggia say, so I'm looking at another £35 for repair or buying a new one. I'll probably do the latter, though I'm now looking at brands other than Gaggia. However from reviews here and elsewhere, it doesn't look like there is any clear winner!

I don't know what is a reasonable life expectancy for one of these things. I was using it about once a week, grinding enough for a week (yes, I know this isn't ideal!) as it does become a bit of a pain & time consuming in the morning, just doing a little bit every day. Maybe 4+ years is good, but I expected more, given the outstanding quality & (deserved in my view) reputation of Gaggia's espresso machines.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good reliable grinder, 30 Dec 2006
By D. Taylor - See all my reviews

I have been using one of these for 5 or 6 years now and use it most days. Very reliable and grinds the beans quickly and perfectly. I only use it for grinding beans for my espresso machine so don't know about use with other types of coffee makers. However, it has a range of setting for how fine you grind so should be ok.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good for a beginner?!
This has been my first grinder, so maybe I'm not overly qualified to comment. I have however been using espresso machines for longer. Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Broken after less than 1yr, and Gaggia refuses to repair under 2yr warranty
I'm not sure if this is exactly the one I bought - but it is similar. I also bought the Gaggia espresso machine. The grinder worked fine for the first 10 months or so. Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Deeply disappointing
Gaggia as a brand carries with it a certain expectation. Recently my old grinder finally died on me so having considered those on the market I decided to buy the Gaggia. Read more
