Practical Photography Gear of the Year 2005

Fujifilm introduces the FinePix S7000 Zoom, and with it the most heavyweight imaging capability ever seen in a 'prosumer' camera. Building on the success and with all the features of the FinePix S602 Zoom - including full manual control and 6x optical zoom - the FinePix S7000 Zoom's Super CCD HR sensor produces an exceptional 6 million effective pixel (12 million recorded pixel) output.

Even before Fujifilm's Super CCD signal processing technology takes control of the image, photographs taken with this camera will possess a class-leading 6 million pixels. After the Super CCD HR has processed the file, the image output is an impressive 12 million pixels - allowing the user to enlarge to 10" x 15", representing gallery-size print dimensions.

This camera offers a serious digital alternative to a film SLR. A compact and ergonomic tool for professional photographers, the FinePix S7000 Zoom also represents an irresistible package for the ambitiously minded newcomer to digital photography. If you have a talent for photography, the last thing you need is to be constrained by your camera.

The FinePix S7000 Zoom's manual modes enable you to exert creative control over aperture, focusing shutter speed and flash. This, combined with the Super EBC 6x optical Fujinon lens, means that even the most ambitious images can become a reality. If you stop at nothing in pursuit of quality, the FinePix S7000 Zoom's RAW mode stores images exactly as they were recorded, pixel by pixel, every time.

Fujifilm's Super CCD HR technology also delivers the renowned Fujifilm colour reproduction, and the sensitive octagonal diodes ensure that images are awash with accurate detail, even in low-light situations.

The FinePix S7000 Zoom offers everything the serious user wants, with a cable release socket, external flash and truly outstanding Super EBC optics. The camera also boasts VGA digital movie mode, recording at 30 frames per second (fps), with sound. An added bonus is the dual card slot, enabling the use of both xD-Picture Card and CompactFlash/IBM Microdrive cards, a combination of formats that will soon be capable of carrying several gigabytes of memory.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent camera for price, function and results, 22 Nov 2004
By Mo "f1mo" (London) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I started to look at replacing my 4MP pocket camera when I started to realise the quality of pictures were not that good in-door and on a very sunny day. The reason why pocket cameras in general struggle to cope with light is due to the aperture, hence why I started to look at replacing my pocket camera. Why I chose to buy this camera was due to several reasons. 6.3MP effective, or 12MP using the cameras internal sensor, it's SLR styled body with great balance, lens size, manual controls, manual focus, optical zoom capability and the ability to accept filters.
When I first took it out of the box, I kept the controls to Auto, the results were definitely better than my pocket camera, but you soon start to play with other controls. I invested in couple of digital camera books which explains more of the advanced controls. I now use the manual controls over the auto and the pictures are truly stunning.
The controls are a delight. The shutter speed can be taking down to 15secs for superb night shots, also the shutter speed can be increased to 1000th sec. The continuous shooting function allows 5 consecutive shots. Lets put it this way, I took this camera to the British GP, and I am glad to say I managed to take some fantastic shots of the cars in action, that cannot be done with a point and shoot, the results you will get will be blurry, but with this camera and a little technique, you are capable of taking pro pics.
This camera is ideal for a photographer who wants more than a point and shoot style camera. The size and controls are obviously a massive difference. Slight downside to the camera are the flaps for battery compartment and memory card areas, they almost feel flimsy, other than that the camera feels solid. Like most manufacturers, they somehow decide to add a tiny memory card which is pointless and also alkaline batteries, which die very quickly.

It is worth investing on some vital accessories as they will bring out the best out of the camera. I have bought the wide angle lens for taking wide views, ideal for scenery and architectural photography. A telephoto lens, this is ideal for increasing optical zoom. A UV filter, this is to protect the lens and also makes photos clearer and sharper, the sky's are more blue with this filter. A circular polariser, ideal for removing reflections (from water, glass or shiny surfaces) and creating vibrant colours during daytime photography. A decent size camera bag is ideal, especially when having so many extra accessories. Rechargeable batteries are a must, invest in two sets of four 2100mAh NiMh batteries with a fast charger, these will provide longer working hours before recharging. A decent memory card is vital, 256mb is minimum. A 55mm lens cap for the filters and a lens hood to cut glare out. Also I will recommend a decent photography book, the tips are vital to learn and get the very best out of a camera such as this. For most of these items, they are available on Amazon at very competitive prices. The wide angle lens and telephoto lens are the cheapest I have come across.
It is worth taking into consideration, to take great picture you still need a good eye for detail, good composition and most importantly patience. Happy snapping

5.0 out of 5 stars The business, 12 Feb 2004
By cbrynr (Wales) - See all my reviews
I have had this camera for over a month now, and have used it mainly for general photographs and also have tried the video function. Mostly I have left everything on the auto settings and I have to say that I have found the camera easy to use plus it's given me very pleasing results. My last digital camera had a 4MP output and even on the 6.3 MP unenhanced setting this camera outshines it by far. It helps that it has a decent lens and a great zoom function too.
I bought a 1GB microdrive for the camera so I haven't had to bother with memory cards - with high res pictures like you get on cameras of this specification it certainly makes things a lot easier in that you don't have to worry about how many pictures you are able to take.
As far as the battery life goes I am extremely impressed. The supplied batteries didn't last too long, but using rechargeables since then I have easily had a couple of hundred photos and downloaded to pc before they went flat.
To sum up, this camera is a well made piece of kit that works well on a 'point and shoot' level, but seems to be just as good when used seriously.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic camera and a joy to use., 20 Jun 2005
By A Customer
I bought this camera in Feb 05 just before a trip to the Galapagos Islands. I wanted something that would take great shots but be lighter than all my old SLR kit. This camera replaced it all in a 600 gram package.
The camera is easy to use for point and shoot but you can get as creative as you like too.
The results I got were really good. I've used it for sporting events since and have captured some great action shots using the 'last five' feature.
I would say if you enjoy photography but don't want to splash out on a full digital SLR this is the next best thing. Unless you spend a fortune on the SLR you'll probably get better pictures with this anyway.
The trim feature is great too. Take a photo on maximum quality and maximum zoom then trim it to get even more zoom.
I took heed of warnings about battery use so bought 2 sets of 2300mah batteries and a fast charger. So far I have never been caught short. I also got two 512meg memory cards.

In summary if you are looking to get into high quality digital photography and like to experiment rather than just trust the camera this is the one for you (but you can let the camera do all the work if you want)!
