Amazon.co.uk Review

Rather than a conventional record of a stand-up comic at work, Johnny Vegas's Who's Ready for Ice Cream? is a pseudo-documentary meditation on what makes good comedy, and how success is a threat to comic spontaneity. Trapped by his own celebrity, Vegas is kidnapped by a brutal de- programmer and shipped off to the Edinburgh fringe to rediscover his roots in humiliation and despair. True comedy, we learn, comes from pain. He is forced to share a room with a truly unfunny comic who wakes him up to tell him gags and forces him to eat baby food; he is sponsored by an ice-cream man, who wants ice cream to figure in the routines; and to cap it all he is randomly beaten by the de-programmer.

Not all of this is remotely as funny as Vegas and his co-stars thought it was, though there are wonderful moments of excruciating embarrassment. However, the routines framed by it include moments of real genius--Vegas at his foul-mouthed, self-hating best. Talking about, say, how he was conned into working with the famous monkey puppet in the belief it was going to be released into the wild is inventive fantasy of the highest order. --Roz Kaveney

DVD Description

Johnny Vegas has crawled his way to the top of the showbiz ladder. Fame, wealth and awards are his but there's a problem...he's lost his edge. He's no longer funny and the fans have begun to take notice... The solution? Return Vegas to his stand-up roots - The Edinburgh Fringe Festival. How? Kidnap Johnny and surround him with a mad lifestyle manager, a meglomaniac sponsor and his obsessive comic flatmate who should've been sectioned years ago. Then just sit back, watch his world fall apart and hope his new found misery means he can reclaim his place amongst stand-up comedy's finest with hilarious results! Succeed or fail, one question must be answered...Who's Ready For Ice Cream?

3.0 out of 5 stars The Big Man lets the fans down, 2 Jan 2004
By A Customer
I'm a big of Johnny I've seen him live, went to watch his gameshow being filmed in London and even chatted to him. I was really let down by this video, why on earth did they put the rubbish documentary on it. The stand up is excellent especially the extras. The documentary/drama really dragged the 'star' rating down and if it had been all stand up it would have got 4 'star'. If they wanted to do something different they should have put together all of Johnny's TV interviews or even his double act with Dustin Hoffman at the Empire film awards.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unworthy of such a talent., 7 Jan 2004

As I watched the main feature on this DVD I found myself becoming increasingly depressed – certainly an unexpected reaction. I’ve always enjoyed Mr. Vagas before; but there was something desperate about this one hour comedy drama.

There was a great irony to Who's Ready For Ice Cream?; but it was an unintentional one: The theme of the show is that Johnny has become too successful for his own good and has lost his edge. His agent hires a “fixer” to kidnap him and spirit him away to the Edinburgh festival, where he will be sponsored by an ice cream man – with one van – and will share a flat with a psychotic comic who eats baby food and never goes out. The whole plan his for Vagas to regain his comedy genius. But as for me, the journey was quite different: I already thought that he was a comedy genius, but by the end I wasn’t quite sure.

I watched, not laughing - It really isn’t that kind of show; even the standup extras – as he seemed to get more and more slurred, foul-mouthed and incoherent as the alcohol kicked in.

I felt this DVD was unworthy of this truly funny and imaginative man. This show was not for me; and it’s not like I’m a prude or anything: I love Billy Connolly’s stuff, Peter Kay, Jeff Green etc etc…

1.0 out of 5 stars Oh dear!, 12 Jan 2004

I was really looking forward to this Johnny Vegas DVD as I'm a fan but I was so disappointed. My husband and I sat and watched it and within minutes were saying "This is awful, it's not funny - what's he done". We sat through much of it but ended up fast forwarding to the stand up sections which, in places, were very funny - unlike the rest of it. It's very depressing (possibly it expresses Johnny's current state of mind?) and does not do justice to his talent. I've seen him far funnier on chat shows. I really wish I hadn't wasted my money buying it on DVD as I will never watch it again. I think it's destined to be another drinks coaster!

Sorry Johnny, but you can do so much better. If you really want to see it, rent it or wait for it to be aired on satellite tv (as I'm sure it will be).

If you are expecting the Johnny Vegas from the telly then don't buy this. I could only manage to watch half of it - it is that bad. Perhaps I just didn't get it!
