Synopsis
The famous ballet SWAN LAKE was nothing without the creative magic of Barbie! Now, finally, the universally loved doll, who boasts a bodacious bod, stars in this timeless tale. Set to the music of Tchaikovsky, an animated Barbie plays Odette, the pretty young daughter of a baker, who follows a unicorn into the woods (let this be a lesson to all those who have considered this dangerous behavior) and is then is promptly turned into a swan by an evil wizard. Though Odette eventually negotiates her sentence to being a swan only part-time, she learns important lessons about not being overly ambitious, accepting one's station in life and the dangers of walking in the woods alone.

From the Back Cover
Barbie magically comes to life in her third animated movie, Barbie of Swan Lake. Based on the brilliant music of Tchaikovsky and the beloved fairy tale, the movie stars Barbie as Odette, the young baker’s daughter who follows a unicorn into the Enchanted Forest. The evil wizard, Rothbart – intent on defeating his cousin, the Fairy Queen and taking over the Forest, transforms Odette into a swan. The Fairy Queen counters the spell, leaving Odette human by night but a swan by day. Odette learns that even though she fells she is the wrong person for the task, it is her destiny to save the Enchanted Forest from Rothbart. But how can a young girl – armed with only her courage, honesty and intelligence – accomplish this, all while the handsome Prince Daniel is falling in love with her?

Barbie of Swan Lake combines fantasy, ballet and Tchaikovsky’s unforgettable music as performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. Peter Martins, Ballet Master in Chief of the New York City Ballet, choreographs the wondrous dance scenes of this spectacular ballet in a way never experienced before.

4.0 out of 5 stars The best of Barbie, 21 Sep 2005
By DocMartin (Somerset,UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Let's get the perspective clear from the start: I grew up despising Barbie in all her guises - her only discernable use was as legitimate target practice for my action man. I resisted all things Barbie until my daughter was introduced to her via this exposition at a friend's house and Santa caved in on her fourth Christmas. Seen through the eyes of a parent, this film does terrible things to Tchaikovsky's masterpiece - cutsie animals, lavender unicorns and a changed ending but my daughter was captivated by this, the best of the series. By that magic ability that six-year-old girls possess that enables them to wrap fathers round their little fingers, she has since added most of the others, though this remains the favourite.

If you can bear to be in the room whilst it's on, there are positives - the animation is remarkably good, particularly in the dance scenes and, of course, the music remains as one of the best ballet scores ever. Another plus is that she couldn't wait to see the real thing on stage and had a much better understanding of the plot and music than she might otherwise have had. Much as it sticks in the craw to recommend anything Barbie, if you have pink-flavoured offspring aged four to eight with any interest in ballet this is an investment that will give you hours of peace and will probably exceed your expectations in all respects.

4.0 out of 5 stars perfect for small girls, 24 Sep 2004
A mix of ballet dancing, pink unicorns, Barbie, a naughty wizard, and a handsome prince is bound to be a winner as any parent of a little girl knows.
I would highly recommend it - especially the fact that buried away in the "more fun" menu is a section where you can play all the dances by themselves. My three year old loves it.
Only minor quibble is that the story is a bit disjointed in places.
