No remedy in Dr Faustus' prescription, 22 Jul 2004
Touted as the next big thing in folk music circles, Dr Faustus have delivered a curates egg of a first album in The First Cut.I suppose it's my own fault. A relative newcomer to the genre, my views are somewhat swayed by my first exposure to the medium being at the hands of those brilliant eccentrics The Incredible String Band. So what did I make of The First Cut? Having been plugged by the folk nobility (well, Mike Harding anyway) I was awash with anticpation, noting reviews that mentioned a 21st century take on traditional English music. There I was expecting the Fairports and all I got was reels, jigs and dirges (although the dirges do admittedly stand out). I'm afraid I don't get Dr Faustus. Of course it is important to understand the role of traditonal music played on traditional instruments, but surely the best place to hear it is on one of the various Folk Roots compilations that are widely available? So, Dr Faustus. Are you an exciting and modernist take on tradtional folk music, or do you represent the very worst excesses of finger-in-the-ear tweeness? Sadly, I know where I stand.
