This unit is sure enough all you need if you are a walker. Plan your routes on your PC and follow them without getting lost once. But as I said, this is not the kind of equipment you can take MTBing. I got mine and the obligatory handlebar mount, but you just cannot read where you're going. The b/w screen is a hard medium to show roads on; but then adding your route (in, you guessed it - black) means that it all becomes confusing. So, I have often found myself turning the map off, which, call me picky, but that kind of defeats the object of having the unit in the first place. It also means that you may as well just buy the cheap version.

Another gripe, for me, is the speed of the computer inside: it's slower than a turtle with a hangover. Changing zoom ratio is a slow process, and sometimes it zooms in the wrong direction which leaves you looking like a nut-bag, screaming at your unit by the side of the road.

Oh yeah, the controls are not what I would call intuitive. Why they didn't just have a unit that works like a Pocket PC, I'll never know. Instead, you get fiddly little buttons which don't do what they are told - especially when you're on the go.

Personally, if you have the extra cash, go for the Legend C with its colour screen. I have just ordered one and it seems much better. And apparently the technology is much more up to date (they haven't touched the insides of the b/w models for a few years).

All-in-all, it's a great unit, in theory. In practice, it falls way below expectations. Either splash the cash or go for the cheaper model - it makes far more sense.

The Garmin etrex legend is a compact system that offers a great del of functionality for the price. It offers excellent mapping functionality, with good navigation support. The system also provides a clear presentation of the current accuracy of positioning. The system is compatible with other mapping software systems besides Garmins own mappoint software, such as anquet maps. This offers the ability to link to UK OS maps. The only downside is that the accuracy of positioning declines a bit in built up areas, in trees or in some cases in vehicles. Overall a good buy with good functionality.

Just got this the other day with the bike mount. It's great. BEst to get the metroguide cd too to upload detailed maps as it can bring up the areas to street level and search for addresses on the gps too not just your PC. Also adjusts knowing you're on a road.
It will keep tracks of your recent jouneys or you can program them on PC then transfer or make waypoints manually on GPS. You can look by Map, compass guide, or trip data which works great in the car (must have clear sight of sky) or even better on the bike. Use it on bike instead of bike computer as it tells the speed/elevation etc and has maps and a backlight. similar size to mobile phone but much deeper. if you don't need colour I'd recommend it, worth the extra money compared to normal etrex and venture as it has 8mb and displays maps and uploads/downloads. Invest in some good rechargeable AA's!!!
