3.0 out of 5 stars Harpo speaks!, 11 Dec 2003

This is a rather unimaginative trawl through the usual trailers and anecdotes - no real analysis of the style or technique of the brother's work and not much that is not featured in the generally superior 'Unknown Marx Brothers' documentary. I wish someone would do for the bros what was done for Buster Keaton in the Hard Act To Follow doc - close examination of his work alongside genuinely moving testimonial from people who knew him.
What makes this worth having for the true Marxist is the full, uncut Monkey Biz trailer featuring the scene from I'll Say She Is! (it's in poor condition but gives a vivid insight into what a Marx Bros stage show might have been like - Groucho is even doing his 'dutch' accent left over from their vaudeville days), the Ed Murrow/Groucho interview (though daughter Melinda's inclusion is a bit painful!) and for the first time ever, a brief snippet of Harpo's voice. This is taken from recordings made during work on his autobiography. It is tantalising not because there is anything particularly remarkable about his voice but because he comes over as a good raconteur with a hell of a story to tell. I'd kill to hear more!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good value, 5 Dec 2003
An enjoyable documentary from the States that traces the history of all five Marx Brothers (six if you want to be pedantic). The quality of the film footage is variable and not just due to the age of the film. The movie footage is mainly centered around the original theatrical trailers which are curio's in themselves (you should should own all the films anyway). Otherwise the interviews of Groucho and Chico are revealing and rare footage of the brothers is fascinating and at for £9.99 is an absolute steal. Highly recommended to fans and anyone with a passing interest.
