New Killer...Single?, 2 Oct 2003
After the "will it, won't it?" saga of the single release of Slow Burn from last year's Heathen (In the end, it didn't get released, at least not in the UK), it would be fair to say that the promise of a new single was not one which was held with very much awe. However, this time it has been released, and a very good song it is too. Essentially the same as the album version, with a shortened introductory section, New Killer Star rocks along at a steady pace, with a catchy little chorus and a decent verse. It might not grab you first time you listen to it, but it does grow on you, and in no time at all you'll be humming it to yourself without even realising it. The video - thanks to Bowie and Columbia for a DVD release - is a strange affair with oddly edited sequences, and not a sign of Bowie or his band throughout the whole piece. In fact, certain scenes in it are reminiscent of nothing so much as the British children's television craze 'Teletubbies'. Decide for yourself whether ot not that's a good thing. The rest of the package is fairly standard fare, and not a patch on the European release of Slow Burn (5 B-sides - fantastic!). A rather empty, if quite entertaining EPK with Bowie commenting on his feelings and reasons behind the new album, interspersed with clips from 5 of the songs on Reality, and a pleasant little cover version of Love Missile F1-11 are what's on offer here. Not a bad little package, then, but another B-side or two would have been welcome. Be interesting to see what crops up on Never Get Old when it gets a release. In itself, though, New Killer Star deserves to do well, but based on recent Bowie chart performance, that seems rather unlikely.
