5.0 out of 5 stars The following tale of alien encounters is true., 14 Mar 2000
By Ben Elliss (Reading, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
"Secrets and Lies" could be an alternative title for this Simpsons collection, since the mysteries that aren't secret all turn out to be fakes! In 'The Springfield Files', Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny play the X-Files agents Scully and Mulder, investigating Homer's claim of seeing aliens in the woods (after 10 beers!). In 'Homer the Great', Homer is chosen to be the leader of a secret Mason-type cult. 'Lisa the Iconoclast' shows Lisa discovering that the town's founder (Jebediah Springfield) was really a cutthroat pirate, and in 'Homer Badman' the serious issue of sexual harassment is tackled (Homer didn't really do it).

My favourite quote is from 'The Springfield Files', where Leonard Nimoy bizarrely introduces the episode: "I'm Leonard Nimoy. The following tale of alien encounters is true. And by 'true', I mean 'false'. It's all lies. But they're entertaining lies. And in the end, isn't that the real truth? The answer is... 'No'"

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a great Simpsons video, 25 April 2000
By A Customer
The Simpson's are the funniest TV show I've ever seen, and this is a great video, don't get me wrong, but by The Simpson's high standards, it's mediocre. The Springfield Files is good, guest starring X-File's Mulder and Scully and containing a hilarious introduction from Lenard Nimoy, but it isn't an episode that you'd want to watch over and over action. After about four of five times, it loses it's 'oomph'. This tape also contains two episodes that have been replayed on BBC Two far too often; Homer The Great (The one were Homer joins the Stone Cutters) and Homer Badman (Were Homer is excused of sexual harrasment). Homer The Great is an okay episode, but the fact that it is far too much about Homer than a usual Homer episode lets it down. Homer Badman is good, though, and it's the kind of episode you don't get tired of easily. But, it's been on BBC Two loadsa times. Lisa The Iconolaust is another mediocre episode. It's okay, but Lisa-based episodes do get a bit dull at times. There's no denying that The Simpson's is the greatest thing since the big bang, but this is a collection of dissapointing episodes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Matt Groening does it again, 17 Mar 2004
By P. Glynn "pglynn9" (Gwent, Wales) - See all my reviews

Dark secrets is a great simpsons video for all fans. The 4 episodes included are :

The Springfield Files
This episode is probably the best on the video and features a hilarious intro from Leonard Nimoy.
[I would give it 5/5]

Homer The Great
This is the stonecutters one. It has many funny one-liners and is one that never gets boring. It is my least favourite on the video and that is saying something.
[4/5]

Lisa The Iconoclast
One that has not been on BBC 2 for a while, so new viewers might enjoy it more. It is my fav Lisa-based episode but Homer's sub-plot is a gem.
[4.5/5]
Homer Badman
The script-writers are on top form in this brilliant Homer episode which has some hilarious moments on the simpson TV
[5/5]

This is a superb video but one negative is that after loads of viewings, it becomes boring.

But, it is a vital purchase for any simpsons fans.
