There are of course many versions of all the G & S operettas but this one has the late 1940s/early 1950s cast including, in particular, Martyn Green who, in my opinion , has not been surpassed. Obviously the orchestral sound is not as lush as on later recordings but it is certainly more than adequate - indeed, and other than not being in stereo, you would not think that it is 50 years old.

However, it is the singing (or, more accurately, the patter songs) which I think is the 'prize'. You can hear the words and really appreciate Gilbert's lyrics - and they are still valid!

I still have the original Decca LPs (rather worn, by now).

Despite the limited recording skills of 1951, when this recording was made, a brilliant job has been done in bringing this version of Patience up to a most acceptable level for todays discerning listener.
The sheer pleasure of listening to Martyn Green with his fantastic diction; and so many famous d'Oyly Carte names that personified this golden era of the G&S operas.
How pleasant to listen to Alan Styler, just a young man when this was recorded, with his very pleasant, mature baritone, but what a tragedy he was taken from us at such a young age.
Isidore Godfrey keeps the orchestra disciplined, likewise the chorus, and keeps the whole production ticking along at just the correct speed. Indeed, a recording to treasure.
