5.0 out of 5 stars Slug back at it again, 9 Oct 2003
By Clara (Leeds) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Seven's Travels (Audio CD)
So... I was thinking when I heard this was coming out would Slug really be able to top God Loves Ugly. Could he find a way to be as sensitive and angry at once as he was on that. Well he has, the beats are more solid than ever before and his samples are just awesome. His second tune 'Trying To Find a Balance' shows he is on top form, it is a lyrical treat and the metaphors are sweet as ever. He still puts himself down but it seems he has ascended to another level and developed more, such as 'Liquor Lyles Cool July' with a really effective beat and good backing vocals a bit similar to 'Modern Man's Hustle' from his last album. The last tune on the album is the real tune of perfection, 'Always Coming Back Home to You', buy the album if only for this tune. Buy two, just in case! Basically Slug is as profound and on line as ever. Don't test!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Some talent in places, 22 Dec 2004
By W. Macfarlane (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Seven's Travels (Audio CD)
Slug (front man of atmosphere) has had a pretty hard life as an underground hip hop man. There is one song that sums up this album and it is 'Trying to find a balance'. Slug creates the kind of quality of rap in this one song as you would expect in 50 cents whole album. He rhymes about how real the unsuccessful life can really get. Buy this album for that song alone. The others I would give ***.

*** Very close to brilliance

3.0 out of 5 stars nasty drums, 24 May 2004
This review is from: Seven's Travels (Audio CD)
This album is way too long, by about five tracks. The drums are not very nice, on some tracks the snare is honestly horrible. Slug may do more shouting, but he fails to express the same feeling in his rhymes as he did on Lucy Ford. Slugs rhymes are often derivative, and he rarely ventures from his 'girl problems', and when he does the tracks don't particularly stand out.
On the other hand, Cats Vans Bags is one of my favourite songs of all time, it has the grimiest guitar loop in underground hip hop and some uber-ill lyrics:
"I'm starving, I'll bite your arm off/ saber tooth tiger, run the night with the sharp claws/ creep in your back yard just to f*ck with your guard dog/ throw a brick through your window and cut the alarm off"
Ant's production has gone somewhere else, from the low key guitars and piano loops in God Loves Ugly, he has chosen to flood Sevens Travels with jazzy guitar licks, funky horns and twisted female soul vocals wrapped around the droning bass lines.
It gets three stars cos of Cats Vans Bags, and it does have a few interesting tunes in the first half of the album, but is about an hour too long and Slug's singing is more interesting than his rhyming.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hip Hop Horaay!!!
A good all round album and definately on an upward curve from the first one (God Loves Ugly). If you liked the first then this will surely appeal to you.
