An eccentric and enigmatic figure, hugely influential during the French romantic music period, Satie was perhaps a self-confessed `odd ball' once quoted as describing himself as a "medieval musician who had wandered by mistake into the 20th century". He wrote surprisingly few works, just 50 or so, and many of the important pieces are included here including Gymnopedies, Sarabandes,Nocturnes and Gnossiennes.

And who better to interpret that music than Italian born French pianist Aldo Ciccolini. A little heavy for my liking and perhaps not so suited to the lovers of a more light fingered display of Satie, but the works here (recorded 1983-86) are performed with admirable consistency.

EMI's slimline 5CD card box includes an informative 52 page (25 English) booklet with biography and track notes.

Erik Satie's music, as it should be played, by the great Aldo Ciccolini: the only (recorded) pianist who understands Satie's music. Absolutely brilliant, - accept no substitutes.
Unfortunately, this box set does not include some of Satie's most loved pieces. For example, there are no Gymnopedies here so, try and get 'L'Oeuvre Pour Piano' - 5 box set on EMI Classics.

A year or so ago I bought this box and only now, while importing it to iTunes, I discover that disc 5 is identical to disc 1. In other words the tracks listed on disc 5 are missing, among those the beautiful Gnossiennes which I fortunately have elsewhere. Of course, I have no way of knowing if this problem applies to all copies of the box, but be forewarned. It's actually still quite a good bargain even without disc 5. Anyway, that's the only reason I don't rate it five out of five!
