5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Bargain Box of Liszt, 7 Aug 2008
By Mr. Mark A. Meldon (Somerset UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
One of EMI's bargain box sets, this 7 CD set contains a vast amount of Liszt's orchestral pieces and his works for piano and orchestra; pretty much all you need from this neglected composer (other than his amazing piano works, of course - see the stupendous Naxos series).

A key figure in nineteenth-century music, Liszt has been sadly relegated by certain critics to an also-ran. Nothing could be further from the truth. A proponent of "music of the future", Liszt popularised "programme music". This means that a lot of these pieces have a narrative theme, rather than being "absolute music", like Brahms, for example. Nowadays, these distinctions mean little - as long as music is good, I like it.

Kurt Masur and the Gewandhaus Orchester Leipzig, with Michael Beroff on piano, set these recordings down in what was the DDR between 1977 and 1980. This set was digitally remastered between 1990 and 1996, and the sound is very good indeed.

The box contains 7 CDs in card sleeves, with a brief but helpful booklet.

I won't list (no pun intended) all of the contents. You do achieve a complete set of Liszt's tone-poems, the Dante and Faust "symphonies" and the two piano concertos. I can't fault the performances in any way - there are not many alternative sets available - and you should try listening without predujice to these works. I have come to "classical" music ("notated music"?) form the world of rock and I think Liszt is quite a good way into this type of music if you are travelling the same path.

The ignored Liszt was a genius, your appreciation starts here!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nineteenth Century Avant-Garde!, 6 Dec 2008
By J. Gibbons (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
During the years just before the reunification of Germany the East German (DDR) record company VEB undertook several major recording projects in conjunction with various western labels (EMI, Phillips, Teldec, etc) with major East German orchestras. Rudolf Kempe returned to Dresden for his highly acclaimed Richard Strauss series and the Leipzig Gewandhaus under their then regular conductor Kurt Masur taped this first class set of Liszt's orchestral works together with those for piano and orchestra. It is a major achievement and deserves the widest possible circulation.

The Leipzig Gewandhaus as this time was a superb ensemble and Masur obviously relishes their virtuosity. His readings of this repetoire are swift and beautifully phrased. Because of their lack of idiosincracy they are ideal for repeated listening and, to my mind, preferable to the Haitink series which, of course, is not so comprehensive.

This music is, with a few exceptions (notably the Piano Concertos and 'Les Preludes'), not widely recorded or, indeed, well known. It all shows Lizst's absolute mastery of orchestration, splendid thematic material, and totally original, forward thinking, harmonic experimentation. It is also extremely enjoyable.

The late analogue recording quality is first class and the remastering well up to EMI's usual high standard. Highly recommended.
