DVD Description
Kyle Lord (Jean-Claude Van Damme - Universal Soldier, Time Cop) is arrested and convicted for the vigilante killing of his wife’s murderer. Kyle must survive life in a maximum security prison where inmates are made to battle to their death in a brutal, no holds barred fight called "The Shu" for the wardens’ entertainment and profit. Kyle fights his oppressors and is quickly sent to "The Shu" where his unbridled rage catapults him to the victor’s circle. This movie was a great suprise and deserved a cinema release. Much better than "The Order" and "Derailed" Jean Claudes last outings.
After Van Damme is locked up in a Russian prison for the vigilante killing of his wifes murderer he must fight for his life and his sanity. A failed suicide bid inside leaves Kyle (Van damme) only one option but to carry on his battle against corrupt wardens, potential rapists and tough opponents in the prisons fighting tournament. The fighting is great and intense but there is no fancy high kicks (martial arts fans will be dissapointed)and slow motion shots, infact the fighting takes a back seat to the story which moves along at a fast pace with little time to get bored. Overall brutal reality, a good ending and a superb performance from van Damme make this a movie to enjoy by die hard fans and anyone else who fancies watching a tense thriller.

A great addition to the ever reliable "prison nightmare" genre. All the usual cliches are here in abundance but it works. Van Damme is very good, the fellow inmates are suitabley crazed, violent or a combination of the two and the prison environment is a complete hell on earth place. His best film is AGES! Well worth a rental or cheap purchase. Better than some big screen releases of late. Wake of Death is apparently even better so roll on a Region 2 release. Don't listen to the the cynics this really is surprisingly good entertainment.

by 2003 van damme had his fair share of flops,thats not to say that some of the failures werent good in my eyes but failure breeds and the man was all but damaged goods,this film went straight to dvd but was a great success there whipping in 30 million in sales,great going and the fact remains that this is a good film that is very character based and a downbeat mood stamped through it.
Van damme plays kyle,an american,yes that stupid cliche despite his accent,working in russia while his wife remains at home all bored and homesick but then she is killed,van damme kills the killer and off to a very nasty jail he goes,where prisoners are forced to fight to make money for the warden.
The storyline isnt the most original ever condemned to paper but it has a brutality all of its own,a savage and awkward outlook on life and a good pace even if it repeats itself every now and then but for all things being considered this is a glorified return to form,4 stars.
