Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Glancing down the specifications for Yamada's DVX-6100, you might be forgiven for thinking you're looking at a much more expensive machine. With a features list that includes MP3 and MPEG-4 playback plus a built in AC-3 decoder to deliver 5.1 surround sound output, the machine is certainly packed full of goodies.

Satisfyingly slim and equipped with a well laid out remote control, first impressions are certainly very good and you'll probably feel comfortable using the machine without needing to resort to the manual. This is good news as the supplied instructions, while adequate, don't exactly go overboard in providing you with information.

DVD playback is gratifyingly sharp and crisp. The DVX-6100 copes exceedingly well, even with darker scenes that can sometimes prove a stumbling block for poorly designed DVD decoders. Blacks are satisfyingly deep, underscored by a full range of greys with no visible interference.

DVD sound is good, although you may experience some initial problems if the SCART connection to your TV doesn't include audio from the centre (speech) channel of the surround sound image. This, however, can be easily fixed using the audio setup to provide a mixed stereo output.

One of the great advantages of the DVX-6100 is its ability to play back MPEG-4 and XviD material. MPEG4 and XviD format material is becoming increasingly common on the Web due to its ability to store high-quality video in very small files. Both are therefore perfect for storing and sharing lengthy material such as home videos on CD.

Using the DVX-6100 to listen to MP3 files and view JPEG images is a piece of cake. The interface for finding files on a CD-ROM is simple and easy-to-use, although the requirement to stop listening to one MP3 before being able to navigate to another stored elsewhere on the CD does slightly spoil the experience.

Overall the DVX-6100 is a capable DVD-player that'll give you a good array of extra facilities without breaking the bank. The ability to watch MPEG-4 and XviD movies without being stuck in front of your computer is a real bonus and if you're happy to live with a few flaws you'll be very satisfied indeed with the machine. In addition, if you have a CD-burner you'll be able to take advantage of firmware updates, available via the company's website, and keep the machine up-to-date with future developments. --Adi Himpson

Manufacturer's Description

It can not only read the common actual formats such as CD-Audio, CD-Video, S-Video, MP3-CD, MP3-DVD, JPEG-CD, JPEG-DVD and Kodak Picture CD but also the very new DivX/MPEG4. The DVX-6100 is compatible to DivX 4.x / 5.x, Xvid and even the "Internet film format" DivX 3.11.

For this high data volume the DVX-6100 features a Chip set for very high 2000Kbit/sec data transfer rate.

With the built-in AC3-Decoder with 5.1 channel output you can plug in a surround sound system and get the perfect home cinema in your living room.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value., 23 Sep 2003
By Pat Burns (Sandhurst, Berks United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I bought this to play DivX movies (fed up with watching them on my PC). I also experienced varying picture size and quality on my 32" widescreen TV, but as long as the movie has been encoded with a resolution of 640 or above (right click, properties on your PC to check) it should virtually fill the TV screen.
I have experimented producing DivX files with different bit rates and resolutions & have noticed very little difference in quality between bit rates of 2000 & 1000 (apart from file size)

I am in the process of seeing how low you can go with the bit rate and still achieve a decent picture.
Of course, if you have a DVD writer in your PC, file size is not that critical.
A couple of guys I work with, bought one at the same time - they think that it's the dog's danglies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally, affordable Divx player away from he PC, 31 Aug 2003
I have had my Yamada 6100 multiragion DVD and Divx player for a few days now, and im more than happy with it.
Many people will be wondering that makes this item different to any other DVD player, including the other Yamada one, that is significantly cheaper. The answer - the ability to play Divx titles. Divx is a media codec that is extremely popular on the internet. Many movies and movie trailers can be downloaded in Divx format, and untill now, they couldnt be watched away from a computer. This player is the first Divx player at a reasonable price, which is the reason I bought it.
It has all the usual features that you would expect to find on a modern DVD player, Progressive scan, RGB scart out, optical out, dolby support and support for VCD's and MP3's. When playing DVD's it performs as any DVD player does, it provides a good crisp picture, and good quality sound when connected to a decent sound system.
As I have already said, the real selling point is the Divx feature of this product, and it hasnt disappointed me. I have numerous titles on Divx, all of which is has played perfectly. As with any computer software, the Divx codec is constantly being updated, which might have ment that this player would be out dated in less than a year. This is thankfully not the case as the manufacturers website has details on firmware updates allowing you to update the players divx and MPEG4 capabilities as new ones are released. A very welcome addition to this package.

All in all I dont think there is a better DVD / Divx player on the market. Great product, very pleased with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars impressed for the price...flawless playback, 23 Oct 2003
By Matthew Dalton "dizmatt" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
nice looking player, not too cheap (although it is a budget player) you get what you pay for...

XVID encoded AVI on a CD didn't use the fullscreen until the ROM update...
however, now it's fantastic.
Tested, home made VCD, decent quality
DVD's very clear, tested with crouching tiger, the dark scenes show no decompression artifacts to my eyes
haven't tested with foggy scenes yet though
Multiple DIVX and XVID movies on CDR.
Played no problems. the controller is pretty good and clear.

Also has a directory function for multiple movies on a single disk.
Overall very good, very impressed for the price and good website support.
only gripe? AVI movies, you can't skip through them, but I think..have to use the 16x FF/RW...however, DVD's are the same I think..a slider bar would be nice for skipping along.
However, very happy with my purchase.
For this price I cannot see any downsides...the controls respond okay, every disk I've used has been accepted, build quality..it's plastic but pleasant to have in your lounge.
Bare in mind that this is a purchase for my father..personally I have a PC under my TV and it plays everything I could possibly want. The Yamada 6100 is a possible replacement for this in a normal lounge and, to be honest, has frankly exceeded my expectations.
Recommended at this price but do install the updated firmware ROM for best results.
