This release is for connoisseurs. But not for them only. Stokowski: you either hate him or love him (I do). He was a charlatan; he was a magician. All his performances are uneven. All his performances DON'T follow the latter. Stokowski had no school, although he had some followers like José Serebrier and Matthias Bamert. He did put Bach back on the map - don't forget that!, like Mendelssohn did in the 1830s - with his lush orchestrations. And now they hate these. Why? That's because of all those purists nowadays. But: music is for the millions; not for the high-eyebrows and the purists only. So, give Stokowski his rightful place too. The success of the Chandos and Naxos CD's with all those wonderful transcriptions is right. Thank you Decca for doing this. Okay, recording is not 2009 standard. Yes, the Tchaikofsky can be bettered, there're much more recordings in the hysterical way. This one is more like Janssons exemplary Chandos set. Stokowski always added his own personal touches to compositions, but which conductor doesn't. If they don't they'll find you bland and `non-communicative'. Have you ever heard a composition interpreted to the letter? Boulez? Hanrnoncourt? They all have their own truth, rightly so, just like Stokowski. That's why classical music is fun: you'll always get something (slightly) different.

The first thing to consider in this set is the sound quality. With the exception of a live RFH Prelude L'apres midi, these are all Decca Phase 4 recordings, so don't expect the usual high quality ffss sound. The sound is close up,ugly, instruments highlighted, and the tuttis congested, undetailed and poorly balanced. (Quad CD player used). Phase 4 recording techniques were a step in the wrong direction for most audiophiles, and EMI didn't take too much notice of it with their Studio 2 Stereo response.
As for the performances, with the excpetion of the Messian, the one success albeit it short, I can't find any single performance in this set I would wish to ever return to. Also, beware Stokowski adds his own personal touches to the Daphnis et Chloe and Fantastique finales, and also has his own say in parts of the Firebird suite. The Tchaikovksy 5 is a laborius affair. For the transcriptions, I much prefer the Sawallisch/Philadelphia offering on EMI. Sadly, a set to avoid unless you are a Stokowski fanatic.
