Synopsis

The entire first series of the action-packed dry-witted smash hit cop show of 1970s. They're a classic detective double act, John Thaw is the mature, serious and irritable Regan, while his young partner, Dennis Waterman, is the cheeky cockney Carter who's a hit with the ladies. Part of London's Sweeney Todd the Flying Squad (rhyming slang!) they're called upon to raid villains' homes, particularly when there are semi-clad ladies involved. Regan and Carter face violent clashes and often use firearms and illegal methods to get an arrest. Undoubtedly influenced by movies like GET CARTER this acclaimed, gritty and notably realistic TV series--where police work is not glamorised and the effects on personal relationships of the committed coppers is all too clear--still has resonance, but at the same time is of its time. This package boasts all 13 episodes.

5.0 out of 5 stars STEELY JACK LIVES ON - THE SWEENEY ON DVD, 12 Jun 2005
This series broke new ground when it was first aired back in the 1970s. It made cult figures of John Thaw and Dennis Waterman as DI Jack Regan and Sgt George Carter. It is simply superb. The transition to DVD had provided a number of pluses, better picture quality through cleaned up master tapes digitally enhanced. It is like seeing the series for the first time. But for me even more interesting is the 'commentaries' - the fascinating insights that the actors, Dennis Waterman, Garfield Morgan and writers, etc, provide when they talk about their involvement in the making of this now cult show. It goes without saying that there is one very sad element to this whole launch on DVD - the fact that the main man John Thaw is no longer with us and therefore was unable to take part in the commentries. Not only is this series an oustanding tribute to his memory but also provides a wonderful legacy to one of the finest screen actors this country ever produced. If you liked the Sweeney first time round, then you are in for a treat.

5.0 out of 5 stars You're Nicked!, 10 April 2004
By Mr. N. Morgan "Green Knight" (High Wycombe, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
"YOU'RE NICKED" became the catchphrase of every secondary schoolyard in the 70s thanks to this tough, gritty detective series. And it very soon achieved cult status thanks to some brilliant acting by (sadly the late) John Thaw and crowd. I won't repeat what's already been said about the episodes and extras, other than to say I was very pleasantly surprised to see that Network have decided to reproduce the episodes just about as verbatim as possible i.e. you get the original Thames Television logo at the start of each episode AND you get the commercial break "stings" (minus the adverts of course) twice in each episode - all of which to me at any rate adds an extra degree of authenticity and "nostalgia factor" (these stings also provide an excellent "pausing place" to go out to the kitchen & put the kettle on).

The transcription to DVD is of good technical quality - pretty well on a par with the excellent job Carlton do with their DVD remasters of old TV series. Don't expect home cinema quality video and sound as these programmes were filmed on 16mm film not 35mm, but the quality is about as good as is possible to get from 30 year-old media.

This set (and series 2 for that matter) are well worth buying - particularly if like me you're getting fed up with reality TV, makeover programmes, "let's go find and buy a house in Spain/France/Outer Mongolia/Who Cares"-type programmes and other such mindless froth that are swamping the UK's TV channels these days. The Test Card had more appeal - at least it was accompanied by some cracking music and the odd colour film on how plastics etc. were made and used.

The Sweeney comes recommended by me. Let's hope all 4 series get released! It's quality TV that will never be equalled today.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Sweeney - The Complete First Series, 22 Nov 2003
When the word 'Classic' is used to describe a film or TV program, too often, after having watched it, you just end up feeling greatly disappointed. This does NOT apply to The Sweeney. Revolutionary when it was made, it has never been equalled in its realism, quality of acting, scriptwriting or filming. Best of all though, every episode is just fantastic entertainment, a concept that seems to have been forgotten by the makers of modern day television.

To the very great credit of Network, they have added genuine Special Features with the Commentaries that accompany a number of episodes. The most fascinating are the ones between Dennis Waterman, Garfield Morgan, Trevor Preston & Tom Clegg. Could we have lots more for Series Two please!!

If you like great TV, get frustrated by The Bill or Mersey Beat and want to own the best British TV Cop Show ever made (or likely to be made), then do not hesitate and place your order now. I did!

When you watch each episode you can even play a game - What have I seen them in since? There is plenty of familiar faces that suddenly pop on screen to choose from.

It is a shame that this DVD collection was only brought out after the untimely death of John Thaw (D.I. Jack Regan himself) but what a real tribute to him and ALL the actors.

We all miss you, Guv.
