Amazon.co.uk Review

If you haven't come across Derren Brown before then Inside your Mind is a great introduction to the considerable skills of the only living Jedi Master. His show, Mind Control debuted on Channel 4 in the wake of a resurgence of interest in magic spearheaded by David Blaine. But what Derren Brown does hardly falls into the category of sleight-of-hand--his "magic" is firmly grounded in the workings of the mind and psychology. The result is a fascinatingly mysterious, but definitely not psychic, phenomenon.

This programme takes the best bits of the series and condenses them into a manual of mind reading. Brown uses the power of suggestion, body language and basic psychology to predict and alter people's behaviour, be it using subliminal messages to make a couple of creatives come up with exactly the same ad for a chain of taxidermists; counting cards in a casino; or guessing someone's PIN simply by watching the subconscious movements their fingers make when they are thinking of the number--all of which will have you shaking your head at the TV wondering how he did it. Derren Brown is a showman of Barnum-esque proportions whose charisma, charm and originality have won him more fans than detractors. Just like the Matrix, no-one can be told what Derren Brown is, you have to experience him for yourself.

On the DVD: Derren Brown: Inside your Mind DVD, as well as containing the best bits of the Mind Control television series, is packed with special features that lay bare Derren himself and some of the techniques he uses on the show. A feature on how to tell when Used Car Salesmen are lying brilliantly demonstrates how he picks up on the subtle subconscious signs that people betray themselves with and will have you starring at people you know in an attempt to read their minds. As well as these "How to" guides there are a couple of interviews, one with Derren himself and one with some celebrity fans all of which adds up to a great insight into the man and his "mind tricks". --Kristen Bowditch

DVD Description

Derren Brown is a new and unique force in the world of magic and illusion – he can seemingly predict and control human behaviour. Whether he’s convincing a medical student to push a needle through his own flesh, scamming a London casino, touching table dancers without going near them, or making a bookie pay out on a losing ticket… Derren’s unparalleled performances will amaze and unsettle you.

He doesn’t claim to be a mind-reader, instead he describes his craft as a mixture of psychology, misdirection and showmanship. Derren is even prepared to share some of his techniques with you. So, sit back, turn down the lights, and open your mind to this extraordinary man.

5.0 out of 5 stars You just hate him..., 28 Feb 2005
By A Customer
The clever d*ck. Whilst watching this man on TV you find him fascinating. You then search for his faults. You then hate him with a passion. Why is he so clever?

The DVD is not of his tour but of his first series on Channel 4. Amongst the many mindbending clips is him making tube passengers forget where they're travelling to, him making a bookies pay out on losing slips and how he conned many casinos in his young days.

You sit they're and you're blown away. If you saw his last tour you'll know that the man is untouchable. If you didn't, the man is untouchable.

Ok, so we know he can hypnotise people. We know he can memorise a 800 page book word for word. We know he can detect lies simply through your voice. We know everything he does can be explained and self-taught... but how? It is truely awesome stuff.

All in all. He should be locked up. He could take over the world with a click of the fingers. Literally. Maybe.

I love him really....

3.0 out of 5 stars A Little Disappointing, 7 Jul 2004
I am a huge Derren Brown fan and was very eager to watch this DVD. However, it comprises of only about 15 tricks, and they are not really his most spectacular - although all are uncomprehendably difficult to achieve! But for the money - the interview, the commentry and his mind control on the tube and greyhound races alone make it a worthwhile buy! So don't expect magnificent extras and hours of Derren, but expect an hour of unique and inspiring entertainment!

5.0 out of 5 stars 21st Century Magic At It's Best!, 6 Oct 2003
By Max (Guildford) - See all my reviews
Derren Brown: Inside Your Mind is basically clips from his popular channel 4 show which is absolutely amazing. There are some incredible things that Derren does. Derren Brown is a magician who reads people's minds but claims himself that he is not a pyschic. The stunts on this video/DVD include going across planks on pillars with sharp obstacles, telling people's personalities by the way they look and tell when people are lying. Some of the stuff that he does on this is amzing and has to be seen to be believed. Special features on the DVD include extra never before seen tricks, an interview and how he does some of his amazing tricks. If you like magic, Derren Brown or if you loved the Russian Roulette he did in 2003, then this is the DVD for you. Brown is officialy better than Blaine.
