Amazon.co.uk Review

When Neil Jordan is really on his game, as he is with The Good Thief, his directorial skill is a marvel to behold. In the character-driven mode of Jordan's Mona Lisa and The Crying Game, this smooth, underrated caper provides an abundance of cinematic riches, not the least being Jordan's peerless knack for dialogue and a tailor-made role for Nick Nolte. For better or worse, Nolte's off-screen drug abuse served him well in portraying Bob Montagnet, ace thief, recovering heroin addict, and beloved denizen of the French Riviera, where his luck is about to take some very clever turns.

The elegant plot is yours to discover; in loosely remaking the French classic Bob le Flambeur, Jordan crafts what one reviewer aptly called "the underbelly of Ocean's Eleven", involving an impenetrable vault full of priceless art, a rescued Russian prostitute, an eccentric band of accomplices and high-stakes poker in Monte Carlo. Nolte is right at home in this rich-and-risky milieu and the combined talents of Jordan and ace cinematographer Chris Menges make The Good Thief a pleasure from start to finish. --Jeff Shannon

Synopsis

Irish director Neil Jordan (THE CRYING GAME, MICHAEL COLLINS) and veteran actor Nick Nolte combine their talents for this breezy heist picture. Bob (Nolte) is a retired master thief and gambler living as an expatriot in France. His past robberies are the stuff of underworld legend, but he's given it all up, and fallen into a twilight life of heroin addiction and seedy gambling dens. Then a chance encounter with an attractive young runaway (Nutsa Kukhianidze) inspires him to clean up his act and take one last big job; an elaborate modern art heist at a swanky Riviera casino. Standing in his way is a cagey police inspector (Tcheky Karyo) who is determined to bring him down, even though the two are longtime friends.
The twisty caper plotting compliments a fun cast (including Emir Kusturica and Gerard Darmon as two of Bob's brothers in crime), clever dialogue, stylish direction, and pretty Riviera scenery. Loosely modeled on Jean Pierre Melville's BOB LE FLAMBEUR, this is something of a pet project for Jordan and it's obvious he's invested himself into every detail of the production. The result is both elegant and warmly quirky. As for Nolte, he seems to be having a terrific time; the charming old rascal role fits him perfectly, and Kukhianidze proves his match with an aplomb beyond her years. Ralph Fiennes has a small role as a disreputable art dealer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zip, Verve, Polish and Challenge, 11 Sep 2003

Neil Jordan has done it again! THE GOOD THIEF is another one of those truly excellent films that for some reason didn't make it in the theaters. Perhaps it takes too much concentration from an audience ready for a blowup blaster heist of a story. That is here, but it it is delivered in so sophisticated a manner that the actual casino caper is secondary to the quality of the story, and characters who populate it. Set on the Riviera, Nick Nolte stars as a 'has been' con man who apparently decides to have one last fling - but to do so he has to shake his herion addiction and clean up his past a bit. This done, he encounters an assembled cast of characters that are each interesting and well acted, from a beautiful newcomer who plays the sole love interest to an arachnophobic body builder undergoing a sex change. The police are for once treated as interesting individuals instead of chumps, the plans for the heist are laid out in a spellbinding way, and the whole planned caper is photographed in stylish camerawork which includes mesmerizing freeze frames that keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat.
If you can figure out the ending before it happens then you will be among the few! Jordan paces this excellent film so well that it packs a wallop and all along the way he offers little asides that make you laugh and make you identify with the incredible assortment of people he has created and directed,

PS: Turn on the subtitles (English) before you start this film as there are so many varying accents in this melting pot on the Riviera that you may miss some great lines if you depend on your ears!

3.0 out of 5 stars It's OK - but, robbed of a ending!, 17 May 2005
Can't belive how anyone can really rant about this film. It's OK, some good acting, good initial plot and it looks like it is taking you somewhere, then.... the ending is disjointed, there is no real twist and you could see it all coming a mile off!
I rented this due to the five star reviews it was given. All I can say is anyone who gives this five stars really hasn't seen many movies ...

2.0 out of 5 stars A major disappointment, 8 Dec 2004
By A Customer
What was Neil Jordan thinking of? An excellent director normally, this is not a film that he will be looking back at with pride. Badly shot, lit, and dubbed - it is not paticularly enjoyable or striking visually - the setting is largely wasted. The script is crude and the acting not much better. Nolte does his usual turn but even he appears bored by it - although the hair is amazing and moved the rating up from one star.

Stick with the original Bob - not this disappointing remake.
