5.0 out of 5 stars It's all about respect, 23 Sep 2003
Any man who fronts a band as good as the stone roses, owes it to the world have their musical inspirations put onto disk for all to see. And with this compilation Brown obliges...

Yet his taste is far from what many would expect, there is little or no sign of rock'n'roll, no Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Led Zepplin or the likes, Which might appear to be a problem (to some), however if you have an open mind to go beyond this, let Borwn take you on a journey of Funk, soul, hip hop, reggae, dub, mowtown, punk, gospel. It's magic.

In each song the quality stands out. The album starts with Genus/GZA "Liquid swords", using classic Japanese style sample intro working into a great hip hop track.
"Under The influence" progresses with Burning Spear & Jounior Byles adding a bit off a regage dub flavour, then a more modern Reggae sound with the likes of Sizzla and Buju Banton flying the dancehall flag loud and clear. The Last 8 tracks then take an entirely different direction with a more mowtown, funky vibe, "James Brown esk" with my personal favourites being larry williams and Johnny Watsons's "too late" anf Womack's "110th street"

All in all, it's a bit special. If you're a big fan of Ian Brown's solo work, this may well be right up you're street. And if you like this, get you're hands on Planet Groove asap.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well done Monkey boy, 13 Feb 2004

This really is a great collection of tracks spanning hip hop, rap, soul, funk, northern soul and gospel. As soon as this CD starts off with the narrative of a tale about a Samurai you know its going to rock. Although it took a couple of times to really appreciate every track on the CD it is now a firm favourite.

Not being a massive fan of the Stone Roses I took a gamble on this collection and all I can say is - well done Monkey boy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Up steps Ian Brown for Mix tape Side 02, 1 Oct 2003
Mr. Brown is back with another compilation of lazy dub vibes, dance hall reggae, Tarrinteno esq. soul and funk, with a few other red herrings laid down to keep your attention. At times its difficult to tell weather all the tunes on this album are chosen because they directly influence his own work (apart from the obvious dub/funk), or weather he just likes the tracks he has chosen on there own merit. At other times its all to easy to read into his choices, as deep slices of significance that somehow transform his own work into something it plainly isn’t. But more over, who really cares! What we have been given is essentially just a really fantastic after hours number, full of diversity, challenging tracks and nice’n easy stand up dance floor fillers. Weather you love or hate Browns music to date, one thing nobody can contest, is his ability to keep everyone guessing as to what to expect next from Mr. monkey. Again this album is another nice surprise and underlines Browns status as a fresh as ever UK talent . It seems no matter what Brown lends himself to these days, he has that magic ability to make it seamlessly work for him, even getting away with Michael Jackson covers? So much so Infact, that after just one listen you cant imagine not linking any one of the songs on this album directly via Brown, even Larry Williams!!!. Another refreshing and great album compiled by the original day dreamer, infact he hasn't made a truly bad album to date has he? Its a shame you cant say that for the rest of the post Roses people!
If you like this album check out "Planet Groove", its like side two of this mix tape and equally as superb! Ian Brown: Still a class act all these years on, who would have thought it……may the monkey rule supreme!
