4.0 out of 5 stars Burned out?, 22 April 2004
By M. Fisher "mattster10" (Staines Massive, UK) - See all my reviews

I'm not sure what's happening in the Bruntnell camp at the moment but thisalbum is a collection of acoustic takes of tracks on his Normal forBridgewater (totally sublime!) and Ends of the Earth CDs. No newmaterial?
Though definately still "Americana", the acoustic versions and harmonyvocals have a more British feel to them than previous efforts. The songsare still great, the performances are fantastic but, played back to back,I think I prefer a number of the previous versions to these (the fabulousslide & pedal steel guitars of Bridgewater...).
Though a great record in it's own right, if you haven't got anything byPeter Bruntnell (and if you like The Jayhawks, Wilco, Burritos, UncleTuppelo, etc you should definately add this to your collection), I'd gofor Normal for Bridgewater instead.

4.0 out of 5 stars Acoustic Bliss, 18 Dec 2005
By E. M. Vlutters "Elly Vlutters" (Huizen Netherlands) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Although Played Out offers indeed an almost complete repetition of the songs from his former albums Normal For Bridgwater (without e!) and Ends Of The Earth, with the exception of the lovely new and poignant I Want You, the songs are all acoustic, with Peter himself playing guitar, and James Walbourne playing guitar, piano, mandolin, and adding vocals. These arrangements highlight Peter's nice husky voice, and these songs being presented in this way certainly adds an extra to his work so far. I am an admirer of Peter Bruntnell, and I also very much like his more 'rocky' songs which are beautiful noise to my ears, but for a quiet evening I definitely prefer this wonderful album.
