4.0 out of 5 stars Window-rattling fun, 8 April 2009
Firstly, just to correct some errors on the Amazon product information - the St Petersburg whatever orchestra do not appear on this CD. This glorious noise is made by just one person sat at a pipe organ. Jennifer Bate's recording was one of an acclaimed series she made for Unicorn Records in the 1980s, which included her outstanding set of Messiaen interpretations. The music here is a few generations older than Messiaen and, whilst not always subtle, has charm aplenty. Boellman's Suite Gothique is fairly well-known and Bate gives it plenty of sparkle without whacking the listener over the head with outlandish pedal stops in the Toccata. The other pieces are all great fun and ideal for showing off the bass response of your hi-fi as well as for armchair travelling to a French cathedral filled with heavenly music.

The Beauvais organ is crisply captured on this single-stereo-mic recording (the technique used for all the Jennifer Bate Unicorn recordings) and the music does not suffer from being overwhelmed by the building's echo in the way that some pipe organ recordings do, although I did enjoy hearing the huge final chord of the Boellman die away in the rafters for what seemed like an eternity. All in all, it's a gorgeous sound and a well-played set of pieces.
