I find it hard to believe that someone could possibly refer to this magnificant work in such an infantile way.This is Beethoven at his peak of inspiration.Need I remind the reviewer that this work was composed around the same time as the ninth symphony,the last 3 piano sonatas,the last celestial string quartets and the hallowed Missa Solemnis.If one can not respond to this work except in such a way perhaps he should turn to Salieri for solace.As far as Richter's performance it is one for the ages.Certainly Pollini,Serkin,Schnabel and others have valid interpretations but with Richter I feel the gamut of human emotion.It is as if Beethoven was trying to distill the essence of his soul through his music in a final statement with these works.For those who love Beethoven and wish to experence a sublime performance of the Diabelli where composer and performer are one, I can think of no other recording that compares.

Having listened to Richter's towering live recordings of Diabelli on Praga and M&A labels and the less captivating yet well crafted live on Philips, I could not believe this one is actually played by the same master! I've got nearly all commercially available recordings of Richter and there are very few bad performances and certainly not as bad as this. He must have been in bad shape on this particular day, as his playing sounds surprisingly incoherent and lacks the transcendental edge.

Richter's sheer concentration and the drama he creates in this otherwise rather tiresome music Beethoven wrote. Mastery performance.
