3.0 out of 5 stars Deja-vu, 18 April 2005
By N. Cotton "nlco199" - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Wings hails from the days when WWI flight simulators were a more common sight in the skies, and is regarded with much fondness by former Amiga owners, myself included. It's appearence on the GBA should therefore be welcomed with open arms like an old friend. However, the trouble with such a re-visiting the past is the danger that say, when you meet an old friend after the initial happy re-union their old annoying habits that your memory had erased clash with the nostalgic picture in your head resulting in tarnished memories.

It's not so much that this is the case with Wings, it was a good game, even you could even argue quite convincingly a classic but times have moved on, this shouldn't matter much if it were not for the fact that the GBA version is in effect a simple re-packaging of the original title. As soon as you turn your GBA on you are greeted by the exact same opening sequences as the Amiga version and the deja-vu continues when you first take to the air to earn your wings by downing a barrage balloon in a virtual re-run of the original.

There are some new features, such as the ability to fly for either Britain or Germany and a 2 player mode. The strafing levels have also been given a makeover and feature more prominently, now taking up a bigger portion of the game. You now have a more free roaming role over a limited area hunting down enemy troops, trains, tanks and aa guns. Bombing missions are also wedged in as an additional feature. The traditional in-cockpit mode which was the core of the original remains virtually unchanged though.

It is in this mode where things start to get annoying, I've lost count of the amount of times during a dogfight, when whilst turning i've collided with another aircraft which wasn't even visible on the screen sending me crashing to the ground in flames. I'm also unable to use the in cockpit view as it takes up about 70% of the screen making you unable to see what is going on around all around you. There also appears to be an issue with the way your 'kills' are recorded, I have shot down a number of enemy aircraft only to find that my hard work keeping the skies free of the enemy wasn't recorded on the de-brief screen at the end of a battle, leaving me with a slight feeling of being cheated.

I must say, this game reminds me of my youth. Wings on the Amiga was an absolute classic, entering in the Air Corp gaining your wings then progressing in the game to become a Major in the sky with more kills under your belt than youve had hot dinners!

For me its a definate purchase as soon as it comes out, if its half as good as the original, then expect a bestseller!
