5.0 out of 5 stars Superb terrorist thriller, 20 April 2009
By F. Messely (Kortrijk, BELGIUM) - See all my reviews

I simply cannot understand why this film doesn't get what it deserves, i.e., to be regarded as a classic in the genre. Extremely suspenseful, entertaining, and plausible, BLACK SUNDAY by John Frankenheimer still is as impressive as it was back in 1977. The premise is strong (`SILENCE OF THE LAMBS'-Thomas Harris's first novel), the plot fast-moving and (we now unfortunately know) quite credible, the editing superb, the acting great - in particular the performances by Dern, Keller, and Shaw. John Williams's score is tense and to the point. Are it, perhaps, the poor special effects near the end which caused this movie to nearly fade into oblivion? I for my part never bothered, for this brilliant prophetic thriller actually made me forget I was in a theater. If only they could do a great restoration and CGI job on it so we can enjoy Frankenheimer's masterpiece of suspense even more for many years to come. And PLEASE..., release it as a ZONE 2 DVD!!!
