Product Description

CD Description
Although many think of Queen foremost as a band that excelled in the recording studio, the group was also an exceptional live band, as the 1979 double disc LIVE KILLERS demonstrates. After years of honing its stage act, Queen had become one of the world's premiere rock concert attractions, featuring elaborate staging and costumes. Recorded during a two-month European tour in support of the JAZZ album, LIVE KILLERS does an excellent job of mixing the hits with the lesser-known songs, and inspired playing by all four members adds an additional element of excitement.
LIVE KILLERS contains twoversions of Queen's famous anthem "We Will Rock You"--a fast rocking version opens the set, while the foot-stomping original closes the album along with its counterpart, "We Are the Champions". Due to the abundance of material to choose from, Queen often combined several tracks as a medley. For this outing, the medley was comprised of "Death on Two Legs", "Killer Queen", "Bicycle Race", "I'm In Love with My Car", and "Get Down, Make Love". Other highlights include positivelyelectric versions of "Now I'm Here", "You're My Best Friend", "Keep Yourself Alive", "Brighton Rock" and, of course, "Bohemian Rhapsody".

5.0 out of 5 stars In Their Element . . ., 26 Sep 2003
By David Cranson (Hereford, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Always the showmen, always going that extra mile. Quite breath-taking when you first hear it. 2 completely different versions of "We Will Rock You". The opening one which attempts to knock you off your seat in it's intensity. Things never really let up from there on in.

"Death On Two Legs", "I'm In Love With My Car", "Get Down, Make Love" (weird!), and the extended "Now I'm Here" - and that'sjust the first half! Coupled with "Dreamer's Ball" & "'39" and you're salivating at the prospect of the second disc.

Things carry on nicely on the second disc too. The brilliant "Spread Your Wings" from NOTW, "Brighton Rock" with Mr May's solo work, and of course "Bohemian Rhapsody" - why did they never play the first section? Things come to a nice quiet(!) conclusion with a rabid version of "Sheer Heart Attack" follow of course by "... Rock You" & "...Champions".

Listening to this you find that some things never changed much over the years. On the other hand it's a good record of where they were in 1979, just before the synths put in their first appearance.

Very good stuff indeed. Play it loud!

5.0 out of 5 stars If you don't own any other Queen albums..., 16 Aug 2004
... then this is the one to start off with. Every track is a hit and performed live on their World tour of 1979. This is Queen before they went 'electro-pop' - just drums, vocals, piano, bass and a single electric guitar. Given the complex multi-tracking and studio effects used in the original versions, it's a testament to their musicianship and the stregth of the songs themselves that they manage to recreate them so well on stage.

At times it's simply impossible to believe that four musicians can create such a wall of sound. The guitar playing is the best I've ever heard from Brian May. The drumming is flashy but solid, the bass lines (once you start listening to them) are complex and skillful and, of course, the vocals surpass any other band in pop history.

What is also incredible is the quality and clarity of this recording - according to the sleeve notes (on the LP version) there were no instrument overdubs. Possibly the best live album ever recorded.

5.0 out of 5 stars Live Killers indeed!, 29 Jan 2004
By robojam - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
Way to go! This is the kind of album that a band should end a decade with. It contains pretty much all of the singles that they released, along with plenty of album tracks, all in a hard-hitting live package.

If you didn't ever get to see Queen live, then this is the next best thing. It's not as slick as the 'Live at Wembley 86' album, but the raw edge shows that Queen was first and foremost a rock band.

It starts with an unfamiliar version of 'We Will Rock You', and thunders through a number of very familiar tunes. It covers most styles that they ever played, and once we get towards the end of disk 1, we get their acoustic set. Just when you think it can't get better it does, and the hits keep on coming. Even once 'Bohemian Rhapsody' is out of the way, they still have more and more energy to give.

All of the band are on form here, with Freddie at his charismatic best, Brian rockin it up, Roger putting in a good vocal performance (Lead vocals on 'I'm in Love With My Car') and John quietly holding it all together.

Live Killers indeed!
