5.0 out of 5 stars Precise, scholarly and BEAUTIFUL!, 24 Aug 2005
By Mr. Corin Stuart "gigantliest" (East Sussex, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Davitt Moroney's scholarship is outstanding and his performance is exquisite. Excellent tempos; not too fast, not too slow. The harpsichord is recorded very closely providing extreme clarity of the voices. The works are in slightly different order, which he explains in the extensive and excellent notes in the cd booklet. He performs the unfinished fugue as written, and then again with his own seemless completion. But with all the necessary and interesting talk of the academic side of this work I often feel the beauty of the individual contrapuncti and canons is forgotten. The solemnity, the jokes, the dances. Interestingly, when they are played with precision and scholarship, as in this recording, these aspects come to the fore. I therefore, heartily recommend this recording for its scholarship and its BEAUTY.

5.0 out of 5 stars BBC Radio 3 Building a Library recommendation, 15 Sep 2007
By T. Thurston (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This 2-CD set was the solo harpsichord recommendation on the BBC Radio 3 Building a Library programme on 15 Sept 2007. Even if your opinion of the harpsichord in general is the same as Sir Thomas Beecham's you might like this, as Moroney makes the music sound rich and expressive. On the other hand you might prefer the modern piano version that the programme also recommended by Charles Rosen at budget price on Sony's "Bach The Keyboard Album" (not currently available at Amazon directly, try www.mdt.co.uk instead).
