5.0 out of 5 stars Best pure pop album since Human League's Dare, 21 Aug 2003
By P. Addyman "padonbike" (Newcastle, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I spent over 2 years in Italy from 2000 until 2002. It wasn't quite the idyllic Ciao, Ciabatta & Chianti lifestyle idealised by pleasant BBC documentaries ... however, I did get to hear some very cool bands: foremost of which would be Planet Funk, with honourable mention going to Swedish bands Kent, The Ark and Hardcore Superstar, plus unknown UK band Zoot Woman.
Maybe you have heard of Chase the Sun from a couple of years back, but there is more to Non Zero Sumness than that admittedly fine dance track. The four songs that top spaz-dancer and Richard Ashcroft lookalike Dan Clark sings are superb. In Italy, Inside All the People and The Switch (both sung by Clark) were singles. These are both superb pop songs in the classic sense of the word (hence the Dare comparison). The band members are obviously refined in their musical tastes, as the CD single of Inside all the People steals extensively from DM's Master & Servant Slavery Whip mix - never a bad thing. All Man's Land always brought a smile to my face as a Yorkshireman trapped in Italy because the female singer has a distinctly Yorkshire accent. I can't recommend this album enough, although the vocal on Tightrope Artist can grate a bit and the concept rock of opener, Where is the Max, may be lost on impatient UK ears not familiar with the fact every Italian is reared from a young age on the more conceptual tracks from the Pink Floyd back catalogue! Make no mistake though, it's still the best thing that I brought back to the UK. It's time for The Switch!

5.0 out of 5 stars Italian genius, 19 Nov 2003
By A. G. Bailey "Dadge" (Birmingham, - United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
'Chase the Sun' was a huge hit all over Europe a couple of years ago and when PF followed it up with the brilliant 'Inside All the People' (one of the best pop songs of 2001, with great vocals by Dan Black and an iconic video) I was really looking forward to the release of this album. Big disappointment therefore that it took so long to get a UK release - but it's here now, so buy it!

If you like Chase the Sun, you'll like Sally Doherty's vocals on tracks like 'Under the Rain' and also the very danceable electro on 'The Switch', 'Tightrope Artist', 'Who Said' and the track they did for Simple Minds, 'Where is the Max'. So far I've noticed the influence of Thomas Dolby, Kent, Radiohead, Dubstar, Bill Nelson and Senser. Intriguing mix!

Albums of 2002: #2
All-time albums: #28

4.0 out of 5 stars TRY IT!...You might like it., 17 Aug 2003
By A Customer
Use your minds and try to look beyond the euro dance links you may associate with this act, for not far under the surface lies some great tunes and great performances by this diverse collective.
If you liked the dance track "chase the sun" a couple of years ago then there are a couple of tracks with the similar sweet vocal which may appeal but what stands out more so is the punchy, almost annoying but acctually inticing vocals of Dan Black. Tracks 4,5,7 and 10 are as much of a look in as he gets of which "Inside all the people" stands out the most for me. I can guarantee that if you catch this live you won't be dissapointed, Dan Black dances like Bazil Faulty on acid and delivers a power that is lacking on the album.
Try it! you might like it?
