5.0 out of 5 stars G's Dragonball Z Budokai 2 Review, 24 Jul 2003
Picking up right where the first installment left off, Budokai 2 promises more characters, more destructive and interactive environments, a few new modes of play, and the return of all the english voice actors.
If you're familiar with the original Budokai, then you know it concluded at the end of the Cell Saga. As most fans will tell you, this is know where near the end. There's still the matter of the infamous Majin Buu and his reign of terror which must be addressed. Not to mention quite a few upgrades in power for our band of Z warriors. For those of you who aren't familiar with the series, it has been airing regularly on Cartoon Network's Toonami for the last couple years. So have no fear kids, Atari hasn't forgotten, and they plan to give you what you need at the end of this year.
Here's the scoop: all your favorite characters from the first installment will once again be present for Budokai 2. Not to mention, there will be 11 new characters joining the fray.
The fighting engine remains the same as the original Budokai with very minor tweaks and changes. As some of you may know the fighting engine itself was the main complaint of the last Budokai. Not having the ability to jump or duck proved to be a major sour note for a lot of gamers out there. But this is not the case in budokai 2. Also have you ever seen how DBZ characters seem to take punches rather then avoid them? Or how people seem to fly rather then jump? Get the picture now? Some of the tweaks I mentioned earlier mainly lie in the Ki Blast mechanics. Similar to Dragonball GT: Final Bout (Nobody can forget that travesty. But don't worry it's not the same), players will now be able to battle back and forth during their special attacks. So when Goku launches a Kamehameha and Cell counters with the same technique, the blasts will now meet in the center where the button mashing battle between players will kick into high gear. Similar to the burst mode, you will now have to battle back and forth to see who has the privilege of dealing the damage and who bears all the punishment.
Some additional improvements for this installment of the series lie in all the extras that will be included. First and foremost, all the capsules you earned from the first Budokai can now be uploaded into the second installment. So your hard work wasn't in vain people. Including all the new characters, the grand total is now bumped up to about 34 warriors. Not to mention a couple new side stories which will bring about 2 never before seen "what if" fusion characters. I will only tell you one- Tien and Yamucha, the other is too juicy to ruin for you.
One of the final new additions I had the pleasure to learn about is a new mode of play called "Dragon Mode". In Dragon Mode, you will play as Goku and lead a team of 3 other warriors as you battle AI opponents for the purpose of collecting the Dragonballs. So that means 4 on 4 fighting kids, just like the old DBZ Legends title.
With all the new fan-friendly additions and even more destructible environments (nothing beats seeing Goku and Vegeta thrash each other through buildings around Orange Star High School), it looks like the console community will get a nice treat this holiday season.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dragonball Z: Budokai 2, 17 Feb 2004
I think that this game, Dragonball Z: Budokai 2 was just so fabulous. The graphics are even better than the first one, the dialogue is in English this time, and the story is even better.
You know that you had the "story mode" on the first game, but on this one, you have the "dragon mode". It is a lot similar to story mode, but you are on a map. You take the role of Goku, and you choose one or two allies for each map.
The story starts on the first map where Raditz and Nappa land on Earth and start looking for the Dragonballs.
On each map, before any fighting, you MUST go for the Dragon Radar so you can locate the dragonball on the map.
If a villain gets to a dragonball before you, or if Goku is killed, it's all over and you have to start from the beginning.
On the first map, after Raditz and Nappa land, Nappa plants some seeds and grows Saibamen.
As Goku and your ally, you go round the map fighting your enemies. After defeating Nappa and Raditz, you get the first dragonball and head off to the second Earth map, where Ginyu, Recoome and Frieza are. After this map, you head off to the Namek map, where Ginyu, Recoome, Frieza and Vegeta are waiting. On this map, defeat Vegeta and he will come to your side.
After Namek, you head back to Earth, where Dr. Gero is waiting for you. He then plants some more saibamen, but different colours. After defeating Gero, Androids 16, 17, and 18 will appear. After defeating them, Cell will appear and absorb 17 and 18. After defeating Cell, Goku senses a strange power in the city and finds the Supreme Kai. Defeat him (he is not bad, he just wants to see how strong Goku is), and he will reveal why he is here. He wants Goku to help him defeat the wizard Babidi and stop him awakening Majin Buu. Babidi then appears, along with his minion, Dabura. Babidi then brings back Frieza and Cell, and even creates a Majin Vegeta! On this map, you must not have more than three fights with Frieza, Cell or
M.Vegeta, or he will submit your energy to Majin Buu's egg, and he will hatch, and i'ts game over. After reaching the egg, Babidi and the egg will flee to the next map; the martial arts stadium. Here, Buu will hatch and kill Babidi. After defeating Buu, who is in his Fat-Form, he will transform into Super Buu and flee to the next map; the time-soul room. After defeating him, he will flee back to the city, and chase Gohan around and try to absorb him. If you are good at this, you can defeat Super Buu before he absorbs Gohan and you won't need to transform into Vegito. After defeating him, he will transform into his final form; Kid Buu, and destroy Earth. You flee to the final map; Supreme Kai's planet. Here, he will bring Frieza and Cell back one last time. Defeat Kid Buu, which is quite hard, and dragon mode is finished. And if you've collected all 7 dragonballs, you can wish for "Babidi's Spaceship" and get lots of Kili to unlock the 3 Buus and Dabura.

There are also many new characters like: The 3 Buus, Dabura, Videl, Adult Gohan, Goten, Kid Trunks, Supreme Kai, Vegito, Gokule, Tiencha, Kibitokai, and Gotenks. In this game, you can't have forms like Cell's first and second forms and Frieza's first form. But you can have Super Siayan 2 and 3 Goku, Super Saiyan 2 Vegeta and many more.

Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not perfect., 17 Nov 2003
By Mr. S. M. Tull "Steve" (N. Wales, Conwy) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
When I found this game on my doorstep, i nearly wet myslef with anticipation. The FMV sequence at the beggining was amazing, the fact its in spoken english was even better and the ability to do fusions with respective characters (Goku + hercule, Goku + vegeta, Goten + Trunks...Im nto sure if you can absorb as Majin Buu yet though.) Its a lot more challenging than budokai, I flew through that in a day. you have to really use your head when against Kid Buu, or just be really good at the game. But, to my dissapointment, the story mode has been replaced with...a chess board. instead of the super cheesy gameplay of budokai when its like your playing the show, you feel like your about to gouge your eyes out with boredom after a while. it doesn't even follow the story, i mean, freiza and cell come back about 5 times. But the thing theyve really improved on is the gameplay. there were times in budokai when I thought, hey wouldn't it be good if you could do that...or something. The opponent can input into your moves, say i do a zanku fist or woteva, goku will do the combo then come flying down and it ask you to press /_\ square 0 or X. If the opponent presses the same, they'll dodge it. you can attempt to push back spirit bombs and death balls n stuff like that aswell. And once you get all the dragonballs (which is a lot easier than in the first budokai, thank god) you can wish for a new game mode where you have to gather energy for babidi by completing battles with special conditions. Its a lot harder to unlock characters too, most are unlocked in the 'babidi' mode. I still havn't fully completed this game, i only have about 38% of the capsules, but...its starting to get a bit old. Despite all this, this is definatly the best DBZ game you can get in the UK, and the fights just look amazing, i dont know how many times ive done a warp kamehameha with ssj3 goku or fused into veggitto; The cel shading is great. Definatly worth every penny, but dont beleive all the internet rumours......like I did (sob). This game is definatly an Improvment on the first, I think its just me with beat 'em ups, once youve played one bout...yove played the whole game...really.
