4.0 out of 5 stars A good comeback - have a listen and I think you'll agree, 28 Jul 2003
By D. M. Farmbrough "Dave Farmbrough" (Wisconsin, USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
After several years out of the limelight, it's worth re-appraising the talents of this former Take That member on their merits. Forget that he was in a boy band, forget that he was in Celebrity Big Brother, just let the music speak for itself. This is a well crafted pop song, catchy and with intelligent lyrics, showing that Mark isn't just the pretty boy pop star but capable of much better things. But it does him no harm that he has retained his boyish good looks AND won CBB and hopefully this will allow him back into the upper echelons of pop music, where he belongs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Catchy, Intelligent comeback - deserves to be a smash!, 2 Aug 2003
By A Customer
What a comeback. Yes, he was in a boy band, yes, it helps that he's maintained his looks - but this will appeal to a broad audience in the most positive sense. The song is one of the best written I've heard this year - intelligent, catchy, with that winning formula - it has a cheerful melody which encourages involuntary foot-tapping, married with pensive, slightly wistful, grown-up lyrics: Mark's voice carries that emotion - never depressing, this will get you singing, dancing - and thinking. And the video (filmed around the City for those of us who are sad enough to notice) isn't not bad either!

4.0 out of 5 stars Oddly Likable and very Listenable, 3 Aug 2003
Critics are constantly complaining about the state of the Britsh singles charts. This has been going on since the early fifties.

However, the sad truth is that at the present moment, they are pretty accurate as to the current batch of singles released by the music industry.

With that in mind, "4 minute warning" is a pleasant surprise.
I remember when Mark Owen made his first attempt at a solo career, his album "Green Man" was reviewed in "The Times", the reviewer said "Oddly Likable, but not particularly listenable"

The reviewer was correct at the time, Owen does appear to have a genuine talent for songwriting, a novelity for a ex-boyband member, even from one as respected as Take That. His only major flaw is his voice, it's not the strongest.

However after saying all this, since his last attempt at a solo career , he seems to have developed the ability to create catchy pop songs if the samples on his official website are any indication, "Oddly Likable, and Very Listenable"

He may fall flat on his face with this comeback, but an viable alternative to Robbie would make things interesting.
