Product Description

CD Description

EARTHLING is a strange album title coming from a man who's made a career out of ruminating on rock and rollers from Mars and other faraway places. But after all this time, it makes sense. Bowie's 1970s experiments in dance music, art-rock and other space-age pop forms helped lay the groundwork for modern styles like ambient and techno, and now he comes across as an astronaut inspired by what he's found and looking for a way to bring it all back home. If his most daring '70s albums were a conscious separation from rock and roll, then EARTHLING, for all its jungle beats, ambient noises and industrial dynamics, is a kind of return, an attempt to incorporate all he's learned into the music he started with.
EARTHLING sounds like no other rock album. The beats, which combine live drumming with loops, have the fast, herky-jerky drive of the techno style known as drum-and-bass; the guitars are an explosive mix of live action and samples; there's an occasional dub-reggae synth line; and Bowie's voice doesn't always come clearly through the clanging music. The disjointed arrangements alternately recall danceable rock bands like Big Audio Dynamite and rocking dance artists like Moby. But it's rock nonetheless, with strong, melodic verse-chorus-verse songs like "Little Wonder" and "Dead Man Walking" that use these sounds the way Nirvana used metal and Madonna used house music--as slaves in the service of the gods of pop.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great "Jungle" Album, 10 Nov 2003

I didnt expect to like this record once I learnt that it was Bowie's "jungle" album - not my favourite musical genre. I expected to hear a collection of songs like Prodigy's "Firestarter" ; lots of fast "industrial" percussion ,jagged rhythms, guitars and raucous vocals. However after grimacing through my first listen to "Earthling" , I found that , not for the first time with Bowie's music , the album is a real grower. It is packed with great tracks - such as the commercial "Dead Man Walking" , the superb wall of sound that is "Seven Years in Tibet" ,the catchy "Looking for Satellites" and the excellent "Little Wonder" and "Im Afraid of Americans" . There are very few weak tracks on this innovative Bowie album and it is definitely worth a listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 24 Jun 2004
By A Customer
The lukewarm reception this album receives has always puzzled me. I reckon it's one of Bowire's best. The experimentation is controlled, far more so than on the loose and rather self-indulgent "1.Outside" (an excellent album nonetheless), the melodies are stronger and the whole album has the raw emotional power to it that has been lacking from much of Bowie's solo work since the 70's. Great tunes, great production, short and to the point, "Earthling" transcends its 'jungle' roots to become one of Bowie's most assured efforts.

4.0 out of 5 stars No Small Wonder!, 29 Mar 2004
By Martin A Hogan "Marty From SF" (San Francisco, CA. (Hercules)) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Bowie’s late 90’s techno-pop experiment was a large departure for the chameleon king. Considering that nearly the entire album is drenched in programming and drum loops, it’s nearly mechanical with no soul. Even so, there is an addictive quality to its musical presence. The opening track, “Little Wonder”, is a hypnotically dance number that has drum patches bouncing around the speakers like gun spray. “Seven Years In Tibet” presents a much needed relief from the frenzy, until the chorus kicks in with a serious graveness. The layering of guitars and keyboards is fantastic. However, the lyrics in “Telling Lies” and “Looking For Satellites” are grating and tiresome. The standout cut is “I’m Afraid Of Americans”, with a heavy bass-laden nastiness and some keyboard work with old buddy Brian Eno. The lyrics are funny and shocking at the same time. It’s no little wonder that Bowie used this song as the album’s representative cut on his collection set.
