4.0 out of 5 stars Back to What He Does Best, 30 Oct 2003

This review is from: Bruce Almighty [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
Looking back on Jim Carrey's vast array of films there are some comedy classics, and then there are some to forget all together. Although this film is a long way of being in the 'comedy classic' genre such as the brilliant Dumb and Dumber it's still funny and most of all it still entertains.

On screen Carrey puts his all into his acting, he msut be exhausted after filming with the amount of energy he puts into it all. At the same time he makes the character, in this film 'Bruce', come alive and creates a character that we can all recognise and sympathise with as we all have (frequent) bad days. In a way we are laughing with him and not at him as he wreaks havoc playing 'God' and using his powers to his own selfish advantages instead of helping others. Here is the films only real downfall, that it can't seem to make up it's mind whether it's going to be an all out funny film or a film that teaches us an important moral lesson. It continually wavers between the two and hence you never feel completely satisfied that you have received the message the film was trying to convey.

The film really clicks, mainly because Carrey has excellent support from Morgan Freeman as God and Jennifer Anniston as Bruce's girlfriend. The portrayal of God by Morgan Freeman is original and interesting and Anniston once again shows that Friends is not the beginning and end of her acting career.

The film can be summed up in one word, 'hilairious,' and I don't think anyone would be dissappointed upon seeing it. People who have found Carrey's rubber faced acting beginning to grate on their nerves over the past couple of years should still give this film a go as Carrey pulls out all the stops and once again comes good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Typically Carrey.....which is typically good, 22 Dec 2003

This film contains Jim Carrey, which to me, is a stamp of approval, even before I've watched it. It also stars Morgan Freeman, another tremendous actor, and another clue to how good the film will be.

I settled down at the cinema to watch this on its 3rd day of release, for the simple reasons of the stars it featured. I ended up seeing a film with a lot of humour, and an excellent waste of 2 hours, which, to be honest, is what films are designed to do.

Basically, it features Bruce Almighty (Jim Carrey), a TV news anchorman, who keeps getting given the worst stories to report on, and after a particularly bad day, he rants and raves to God, who promptly invites him to take over the job. Bruce then uses this powers to turn his life around, before realising that maybe, not even God's powers can help him.

A hilarious film, typical Carrey, which also features Freeman as God, and the ever gorgeous Jennifer Aniston (Rachel in Friends) as Bruce Almighty's partner.

The film's only failing was in its potential aim to get across a philosophical message to the viewers, but when the film's this funny, I don't really care. A great addition to Carrey's portfolio next to Ace Ventura, and really, the greatest compliment I could hand this film is that it now replaces Ace as my favourite Carrey film.

4.0 out of 5 stars "I am Bruce Almighty. My will be done.", 15 Jan 2009
By Andrew Kerr (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Bruce Almighty [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
Bruce Almighty is a comedy that was released in 2003 and was directed by Tom Shadyac. The cast comprises of Jim Carrey, Morgan Freeman, Philip Baker Hall, and Jennifer Aniston.

Local TV reporter Bruce Nolan (Carrey) is having a rough time. Nothing seems to be going right for him, and after the worst day of his life, he becomes outraged and starts to blame God for ruining his life. He even stands in the middle of the road and shouts "Smite me oh mighty smighter." Shortly after this, he finds himself face to face with his creator (Freeman), who hasn't liked all of Bruce's complaining, so decides to endow Bruce with all of his powers for one week, to see if Bruce can do a better job than him. Bruce initially doesn't believe it and simply thinks that the man he saw was insane, but soon comes to release that's it true, and sets about to have some fun. But when things start to get serious he is unprepared, and this leads to some strange but funny situations.

The plot to Bruce Almighty is simple, but fun and entertaining. The film is very comical in places, and it's easy to watch. It's also quite sad at times, and has a deeper meaning about the value of life, and how the world does not evolve around one person. We've all had bad days, so I think there is something we can all relate to in the film.

Two of my favourite scenes that come to mind are when some thugs (who had earlier beaten up Bruce) get their comeuppance. And when Bruce sabotages Evan's (a rival reporter) performance on air.

The characters in the film are great, very believable and easy to identify with. The acting from the main cast is fantastic. Jim Carrey as allows is in good form and Morgan Freeman seems really suited to play the somewhat serious role of God.

There are some decent special features included on the DVD, most noticeably outtakes and delete scenes, which are worth a watch.

The beginning of the film is a bit slow, but things seriously pick up once Bruce becomes Almighty. It's not the most serious of films and as long as you don't engage your brain too much, then you can enjoy Bruce Almighty.

I've you not a fan of Jim Carrey, then I do suggest you avoid this film, other than that give Bruce Almighty a watch.
