Amazon.co.uk Review
The second series of Happiness, Paul Whitehouse's rueful midlife crisis sitcom, sees the same cast of characters caught in the same rut but, in the great tradition of sitcom, never really going anywhere. Whitehouse's widower Danny Spencer is still making a tidy living doing the voiceover for a kiddie's animated Kung Fu Nurse Bear, still frustrated that while everyone loves the bear, no one either knows or cares who he is. There are some changes, though: Danny is less sympathetic, more bitter and prattish in this series; Clive Russell's ageing Lothario is still raving and squiring like a twentysomething, but gets a wake-up call; Fiona Allen's Rachel and pathetically, wonderfully whiney husband Mark Heap's marriage suffers a severe blip when the latter lapses hopelessly into an affair with Rachel's best friend Neela.

Meanwhile, it's Johnny Vegas and Pearce Quigley as Sid and Charlie, who, having started off their own removals business ("We'll Do Anything!"), provide many of the series' biggest belly laughs, especially in their disposal of a cat they unfortunately run over.

A match for the first series, the second year of Happiness is the same mix of ageing baby boomers grumbling over modern pop culture, convincingly inconsequential conversational banter and celebrity guest appearances, including Kathy Burke sportingly playing herself as an obnoxious old trout treating non-celebrities like underlings.

On the DVD: Happiness, Series 2 has no extras on the DVD. --David Stubbs

2.0 out of 5 stars Superb series badly let down by soundtrack changes, 16 Oct 2003
By A Customer
Having greatly enjoyed the TV versions of both series of Happiness, and the DVD of Series 1, I was chuffed when this became available. - I need not have been.

The soundtrack to both series was much more than background noise: the music was extremely well chosen to complement the action & dialogue, and often MADE a scene rather than merely underscoring it.

Unfortunately, a number of changes have been made between the TV broadcast version and this DVD release of series 2. The effect is noticeable throughout but difficult to pinpoint for a while, and you find yourself wondering at times why you had originally thought this was such a great show based on the lacklustre DVD experience.

I didn't realise exactly what was wrong until several episodes in when (not to spoil the plot too much for anyone who hasn't seen it) one character is taken ill on his motorbike. This was a superb sequence on TV, and the music (Gary Glitter's 'Rock & Roll')was an essential part of what made it work. On the DVD, the whole effect is lost as a much weaker tune is used which doesn't even match the rhythm of the action, let alone add to the mood.

The BBC has, I notice, covered itself against complaints on this score by including a tiny, lawyerly note on the back of the cover which states that some musical edits have been made for contractual reasons. Sorry, but that's not good enough.

Unfortunately, the soundtrack changes make this a pale reflection of the original. I regret buying it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comedy Drama at it's very best!, 8 Nov 2003

Enter Happiness Series 2! It is just as fresh and funny as the highly acclaimed first series, the character's still as believable as ever and putting across thoroughly excellent perfromances. This show is unique because it blends knife edge drama, hilarious comedy and throws them together - the result is a very down to earth piece of television.
With genius Paul Whitehouse (Harry Enfield and Chums, The Fast Show( at the lead,Happiness is a real breath of fresh air. Much better than the Office which in my view is just overated and offensive. Anyway if you won't comedy, great characters, real life situations and top drama, look no further, Happiness is indeed the DVD for you. Immensely enjoyable¬ Only one critism to amke, there are no extra's. Never mind - it is still fabulous stuff! Sorry I forgot to mention the amazing Kong Fu Nurse Bear with animation from Aardman, that is brilliant and gives the show that little bit extra. Great!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as series one...but still very good, 6 Nov 2008
I felt it lost a little majic, but only a little, love the series, the actors, the plots, the everything. I would say if you liked The Bookgroup or Manchild you would love this one too.
