Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review

You'll need no incentive to watch Series 6 of Only Fools and Horses beyond the knowledge that the very first episode of the six herein is the one in which Del takes that legendary pratfall when leaning against a non-existent bar counter. This is without doubt one of the greatest moments in British TV comedy.

Other than that, what do we get? Well, this is the series in which Rodney first takes up with Cassandra. Gwyneth Strong's deftly underplayed, near-deadpan approach to the role of Rodney's soulmate is perhaps one of the most underrated elements in the show's entire run, even if the writers rather ran out of things to do with her almost at once. Ironically, then, despite her introduction, this isn't the strongest of Only Fools collections. Nevertheless, there are enough gems to remind you just why this show was such a success, among them the Spanish holiday episode in which Rodney has to pretend to be 14 and the propane-filled blow-up dolls episode, which really doesn't need a punchline.

On the DVD: Only Fools and Horses, Series 6 two-disc set is presented in standard TV 4:3 ratio, with no special features--unless you count the injunctions on each disc's menu to insert the other disc if you want to watch the other episodes, "... you plonker!". --Roger Thomas

4.0 out of 5 stars Only Fools and Horses Finest Hour(s), 28 April 2000
Series 6 sees of this oft repeated series definitely was the highspot with the shows becoming 50 minutes with stronger storylines, the introduction of Cassandra as Rodney's love interest (the series finishes with their wedding), the relaunch of Del as a Yuppie and some magic TV moments that live long in the memory after the tape has been returned to its nice presentation box. (Remember Del Boy leaning against the non existent bar - the exploding inflatable dolls - Rodney masquerading as a 14 year old competition winner in Majorca?). Performances and production are faultless - even in minor roles and this will be on the shopping list of fans and Majorca pub owners where the series seems to be permanently on display. Replace those worn out taped from TV copies with this ace set!

5.0 out of 5 stars Far and away the best of all the series, 21 Aug 2003
This is when Only Fools and Horses really stepped up a gear (1989). The episodes went from 30 minute slots to 50 minutes, and the situations that the two brothers plus their Uncle Albert found themselves in became priceless.

Yuppy Love has Rodney meeting Cassandra for the first time and Del falling over in the wine-bar (yep, it's that one). Danger UXD is about a dodgy consignment of blow-up dolls that fell off the back of Denzil's lorry. Chain Gang has all the regulars (Trigger, Boycie, Mike) plus our three heroes falling for a con-trick from an ex-jeweller. The Unlucky Winner Is... has to be one of the funniest TV comedy moments ever. Rodney wins a trip to Spain by entering a painting competition ("Del, I never entered this competition"), but as the painting was done when he was 14, he has to go skateboarding with the other members of the Groovy Gang while Del and Cassandra pretend to be his doting parents. Sickness and Wealth sees Del become ill through his yuppy lifestyle ("Lunch is for Wimps"), and Elsie Partridge host a seance. And the final episode, Little Problems, has Rodney marrying Cassandra whilst Del gets beaten up by the Driscoll Brothers. The extra twenty minutes per episode suddenly meant the scripts could fit a lot more in. Each episode seems to include far better stories than the half-hour slots we were used to. It didn't get better than this...

3.0 out of 5 stars They cut it!, 23 Sep 2003
Only Fools And Horses is the best comedy that was ever created. This series is perhaps the best and every episode is a classic! All six episodes are spread over two DVDs (no double-sided disc, yay!)

One thing that *really* spoiled it for me is that they added a really long advert introduction to the first DVD and cut some footage from the first episode "Yuppy Love". It is all from the scene when they're in the night club and they cut some exchanges between Casandra and Rodney and some footage between Mickey and Jevon. It no longer flows properly now and that is why I gave it 3 stars otherwise I would give it 5.
