CD Description

The soundtrack to the 2003 film starring and co-written by Bob Dylan obviously centres around the legendary songwriter's compositions, but with a twist. The bulk of the selectionshere are Dylan tunes performed by other artists, some beinginternational performers who've translated the lyrics into their native tongues. To hear a Japanese version of "My BackPages" by the Magokoro Brothers, or an Italian-language take on the BLOOD ON THE TRACKS ballad "If You See Her, Say Hello" is to enter into a delightfully surreal and entertainingworld.
There's also a batch of Dylan performances that were captured live on a soundstage specifically for the movie. The bluesy, apocalyptic "Down in the Flood", the folk song"Diamond Joe", a straightforward version of the old warhorse "Dixie", and an ominous take on TIME OUT OF MIND's "Cold Irons Bound". These cuts capture the raw, rootsy power of Dylan's late-'90s/early-'00s band perfectly, and show that 2003found him still very much a vital force.

First let me say that all though a Dylan nut who owns about 26 of his albums I'm not one of those obsessives who knows every last detail of every last recording.I say this because some of these tracks have obviously been released before but are all new to me.
Having got that out of the way this is a delightful set of Dylan covers plus 4 new (?) tracks by the man & his current excellent touring band.Down In The Flood & Cold Irons Bound are new rocking versions while Dixie & Diamond Joe sound like a group of good ol' boys sat on the porch jammin' away.
The other songs flow from the class americana of the Grateful Dead & Jerry Garcia selections to the stormy gospel blues of Shirley Caesar's version of Gotta Serve Somebody.Los Lobos add a latin touch to On A Night Like This while the sparse reading of Most Of The Time by Sophie Zelmani,a new name to me, is simply breath taking.
There are 3 foreign language versions here & surely none more bizarre than My Back Pages by the Magokoro Brothers....in Japanese !
Both cover version/tribute albums & movie soundtracks can be notoriously dodgy but this is a surprising well balanced & rewarding listen close in feel to the Chieftan's Tears Of Stone album while for some reason also reminding me of Alligator Records 20 th Anniversary set too.
Now let's just hope the film is as good.

The soundtrack to masked and anonymous like the film itself is both fascinating and weird. As previously commented upon the cover of 'My back pages' in Japanese is wonderfully strange, while the cover of 'Most of the time' hauntingly beautiful. The entire album contains a wonderful range song interpretations that hang together extremely well. Dylan sings and is supported well on his four contributions but why have CBS not released more of the 20 or so song he recorded for the film. Having viewed the DVD I would love to here the new interpretations of 'Trying to get to heaven' or 'Knocking on heavens door'. Perhaps these are being kept up the sleeve of Columbia for a possible future release as the Bootleg series Volume 5 or 6.

For a Dylan devotee this is a must have, but don't expect the pure Dylan sound. There are a few somewhat quirky takes on some of his most wonderful music and lyrics. It has become one of my favourite CDs to play in my truck, it makes me feel joyous and alive, Bob Dylan is a musical genius and obviously had fun with this production.
