Bad game, brilliant marketing, 24 Jan 2004
By A Customer
I pretty much bought this for the Final Fantasy X2 add-ons, which I got, so I can't really complain... However, as games go, after the intro and an hour of playing, my first thought with unlimited saga was to stick it in a corner of my room and hope it went away, whilst wondering about other things I could have spent the money on...It didn't go away, so I eventually thought I might as well try again...it didn't improve with age like I'd hoped it might...it's still repeating on me...in fact, it's a bit like a hangover..it seemed like a good idea at the time, I can't remember why I did it, but I know it cost me money...Graphically it reminded me of the days when animation was thought of as a drawing that moved across the screen, a little like monty python without the comedy... the drawings are beautiful, but they are still just drawings, without even the primitive animation of walking across a screen like the age old coin-ops like golden axe...If I drew a smily face on a sticker stuck to the end of a pencil and waved it in front of your face, would you think you were watching an animated masterpiece? Evidently, square think so, and seem to have made money from it....this was to be the first of many letdowns by this game... Gameplay is difficult to get into, and not something you can enjoy without huge investment of time..there is nothing evident or eye-catching about the battle system or modes of play, and the manual isn't much help either...It's not too much to ask for to be able to play something pleasing to the eye and easy to get into...If I wanted to work at it, I would get a job in the gaming industry, not get a job somewhere else and be screwed out of my money in order to have to work on playing a game (it's kinda hinted at in the word play...some enjoyment would be nice) Music cannot really be faulted, as with any square release. If you are thinking of buying a square game, wait for FFX2 and pretend you never heard of unlimited saga, unless you have a spare 40-50 hours with nothing to do and you really want to work damn hard at trying to enjoy this release.... Another shrewd marketing ploy by square, hats off to them, for being able to sell rubbish like this by sticking a gold star like a final fantasy preview on it... This will stop me from buying a non FF square release in the future without serious thought....

Unlimited Saga =/= Final Fantasy, 1 Dec 2003
The most important thing to remember when considering to buy this game is that it is not a Final Fantasy game, in any way shape or form, but is from Squaresoft's Saga series and plays along those lines. What this game is, is a Hardcore RPG for people who don't mind spending a hour before any adventure just setting there party up, or having played for an hour or two, then dying and having to do the adventure again. Basically this is Advanced Dungeon and Dragons while Final Fantasy is Hero Quest. While Final Fantasy is a light romp through the world of RPG's, Saga expects a lot more out of you. Personally I enjoy the game a lot, from its freedom to choose what quest you do to the 2D hand drawn art, so the 4 star is a personal rating. However you should think about what sort of RPG gamer you are before buying it because only those who really get into messing around with lots of stats, like making sure your weapon doesn't break, should consider it. Not for people who like to look at sparkley effects, have easy to do missons and a simple narrow storyline to follow. Those people should probably wait for FFX-2.

The Pain of a Final Fantasy Mega-Fan, 30 Nov 2003

'Unlimited Saga'? Try 'Limited Patience'. Your'e a gamer, a huge fan of RPG's probably, you see Unlimited Saga in the stores and think "Wow! This looks like a Square classic!" You buy it and drive home as fast as you can, taking every possible shortcut you can all the time thinking of how brilliant Unlimited Saga, Squares latest 'major' release. Eventually you arrive back home, still anticipating how 'great' this game will be. You rush to your Playstation 2, unfold the the fold out cover, take out disc 1 (the game disc) with extreme care, place it in to the disc tray and finnally press the reset button as you settle down for a good few hours of Square RPG gaming. While the game loads you gaze in wonder at its cool-looking pakaging particularly wooed by the 'painted graphics'. The reflex of dropping the pakaging as the music of the opening sequences begins. You begin your quest with one of the seven protagonists of the tale. The game begins and you are instantly amazed, not by the games glory, but by the games pure lack of Square class. If you have played on some of Square's many masterpiece's, you will be astounded at how the same company can create game so much worse than its wonderful ancestors. The graphics, at times are utterley incredible, but too much of the time they are worse than any of the Playstation 1 Final Fantasy games! The gameplay is horribly complicated and battles are so appauling, the realitivley good idea of the 'reel' system is put to shame. Your character walks on a ridiculous path on a map which is also terrible and in towns the backdrops are flat pictures that aren't animated at all. Square, being the genius' they are will have noticed how poor Unlimited Saga is and added the Final Fantasy X-2 prologue to try to ease the pain of Square lovers all over the world. This game had all the potential it needed but for once Square didn't come good. If you have already made the mistake of buying this game make sure you return it before it can cause you any more pain. The ONE positive of the game is its excellent sound track, but if you want good music, you can just fork ot a tenner for a CD! Positives: - Great sountrack - Some 'Great' visuals - Sometimes can be O.K - Each of the 7 quests takes 20 hrs Negitives: - Appauling use of the Square liciance - Utterley boring - Awful graphics at times - Rubbish characters - Disgraceful gameplay - Horrible battles - Their is going to be a sequal - David Blaine could not manage 7 20hr quests on this - Extremley difficult Overall: After creating this junk Square should take a long, hard look at themselves and hurry up the release of Final Fantasy X-2 (please). Whoever designed this game will shoul e fired faster than it takes to hate the game they designed.Graphics: 6/10 Gameplay: 4/10 Sound: 8/10 Value: 3/10 DON'T BUY IT!
