Encouraged by the success of the first VERVE REMIXED album,the techno-friendly souls at Verve have once again opened up their vaults to electronica artists. This time around, theFunky Lowlives kick things off with Dizzy Gillespie's "Manteca", a minimal yet urgent rendition of the classic, repletewith occasional synthesizer washes and driving percussion. Felix Da Housecat gives Nina Simone a fittingly decadent house treatment on "Sinnerman", while the Gotan Project takes amore subtle accordion-driven approach on Sarah Vaughan's saucy "Whatever Lola Wants". Other standout tracks include Layo & Bushwacka's dreamy remix of Ella Fitzgerald's "Angel Eyes", Fila Brazillia's sunny version of Cal Tjader's "Soul Sauce", Dan the Automator's funky side of Willie Bobo's "Fried Neckbones and Some Home Fries", and Koop's surprisingly traditional version of Astrud Gilberto's "Here's That Rainy Day". While these re-workings are obviously dance-floor oriented, the brilliance of the original recordings always manages to shine through, making the collection appealing to both club kids and jazz fans.

The runaway success of the first volume of 'Verve Remixed' in 2002 made this second volume inevitable. And to some extent it smacks of dead horses, flagellation and cash registers. I mean, do we really need a Gotan Project remix of Sarah Vaughan's 'Whatever Lola Wants'? The answer is - probably not. But as with the first album, 'Verve Remixed 2' is intermittently engaging and a pleasurable if not essential listen. Doubtless trendy clubs, overpriced cappuccino bars and chic boutiques will thrum to its strains for the months to come. Perhaps the big strength (some would say the weakness) of volume two, is the choice of lesser-known booty from the Verve vaults. Whereas volume one was content to re-shape the familiar and the over-familiar (viz. 'Strange Fruit' and 'Summertime'), volume two finds unlikely new heroes such as Ramsey Lewis and Carl Tjader. The latter's insistent 'Soul Sauce' is well suited to a Fila Brazillia makeover. Meantime the recently departed Nina Simone scores two more remixes with 'Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair' and 'Sinner Man'. Ah yes, and on 'Sinner Man' Nina battles bravely while the club next door thumps out New Order's 'Perfect Kiss'. Or at least that's what it sounds like, thanks to Felix Da Housecat. Koop give Astrud Gilberto a more sympathetic backdrop on 'Here's That Rainy Day', a forgotten gem from her 1966 album 'A Certain Smile A Certain Sadness'. Now surely if this was simply a Verve Cash Cow, we would be treated to William Orbit's remix of 'The Girl From Ipanema'. Or maybe that's planned for 'Verve Remixed 3' next year?

Bring together the best djs of the day to mix the best music of the past, and you get this incredible cd, full of surprising and different flavours. You will find yourself listening to those tracks again and again and again. It's an endless source of pleasure. Enjoy!

The Verve stable come up trumps again, with a superb selection of remixes by electronic artists of their excellent back catalogue of jazz. Although the biggest tune on here is Felix da Housecat's remix of 'Sinnerman' by Nina Simone, it is by no means the best, a little straightfrward for me. There are tracks on here that will make you wanna dance, and tracks to smoke to. Possibly the best remixes are the Gotan Project's and Mr Scruff's. An excellent selection of remixers and an excellent selection of tracks.
