Manufacturer's Description

Top-of-the-line in the new Philips DVD Recorders range is the DVDR80, in a slim design with a height of 76 mm. The DVDR80 offers outstanding convenience, which means making a timed recording on DVD is as easy as pressing a button. This model has the GUIDE Plus+ on-screen TV guide, plus Disc Manager, which makes it easy for you to find specific recordings very quickly. The DVDR80 also allows up to 8 hours uninterrupted recording on a single DVD disc--the ideal solution for recording all your favourite TV programs while they are away on holiday.

Among the DVDR80's many other features are an i.LINK connection for direct, high-quality transfer of images from your digital camcorders to DVD discs, and the unique Sat Mouse, which allows the DVD recorder to automatically control a satellite receiver, making unattended recordings easy. The Philips DVD Recorder is not only about recording in perfect digital quality. In just a few simple steps, Favourite Scene Selection enables you to edit your DVDs from the comfort of your sofa. An intuitive onscreen menu makes it easy to keep track of all the picture-perfect digital recordings you've stored on the disc. This enables you to make simple scene selections at the touch of a button--just select the scene you want and press "Play" to watch it instantly. Disc Manager enables you to view the contents of the DVDs you've created without having to load them. It provides a summary of all your recordings so you know which disc to load. Disc Manager also identifies blank space, helping you choose discs for new recordings. The Philips DVD Recorder uses the same discs as DVD and RW drives in PCs. What's more, the discs you record will play on existing DVD-ROM drives. And with the right software/hardware package for your PC, you can make sophisticated video edits on your DVD+RW discs.

Naturally, you'll want to share your DVDs with all of your family and friends. For this reason, every Philips DVD Recorder offers you two-way compatibility. This means they can play all of the DVD and CD discs you already have, while the DVDs you create will play on virtually all DVD-video players. Only DVD can bring an authentic cinema-style home-entertainment experience into your living room. And thanks to the latest range of DVD Recorders from Philips, the picture quality of the DVDs you create at home can be just as good as the DVDs you currently rent or buy. Audio is digitally encoded in Dolby AC-3 (USA) or MPEG Audio (Europe). As a result, the sound quality of a recording, like the picture quality, is comparable to that of pre-packaged DVD-video discs. All these features and more make the DVDR80 a high-end DVD recorder that provides a total home-cinema experience without the usual complexity.

4.0 out of 5 stars Funky and cool but can be tricky, 15 Oct 2003
By A Customer
I have just purchased the DVDR80 for only £365 From RGB the Argos price is £550. The machine offers variable recording length at different levels of quality with up to 4 hours recording being very good quality (DVD) up to 8 hours at VHS quality. The machine can be a bit time consuming to get used to with all the different features available such as chapter editing. But can very easily be used as a simple video recorder should you be happy to skip all the extras available. Conectivity is good with optical and coaxial digital audio output as well as the usual video outputs including componet. Added to this is the ilink feature for us digital video camcorder users that guarantees perfect quality transfers.
The unit looks very cool from the front with a simple red button record and a stylish red glow that surrounds the dvd compartment when recording. I have used the unit to back up old VHS home video that was deteriorating with age as well as recorded tv programs from my Sky+ box that we wished to keep.
This version also has the Guideplus system that makes setting the timer very simple equal to the Sky+ system in its point and click functions. The unit can be a bit sluggish in its operation taking its time to read disks initially and the remote is a bit cluttered with all the features which I think could have been simplified into a single menu function button with options from there. Rather than the scattering of menu buttons that exist.

On the whole I am very pleased with the unit and I am convinced that DVD+ is the format of the future due to its complete compatibility with existing DVD players unlike DVD- and DVDRAM which are usuless to anybody wishing to borrow a film or home video to watch on their existing DVD player. The support and comitment of the bigger players such as Sony and Philips amongst others reinforces my satisfaction that I have not brought the Betamax of the Video world. But a future proof DVD recorder that has replaced my VHS.

4.0 out of 5 stars Typically Philips..., 28 Dec 2003
By Mr T E H Mabbs (CANTERBURY, Kent United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
A typical Philips product - generally technically superb, but with an abysmal user interface and in this case with a remote control unit the designer of which should be shot.
Quality of recording is superb, and produces excellent DVDs. In particular, the disk menu is very professional compared to any of the alternative recorders I have seen.
However, it is let down by the combination of cumbersome user interface and very poor remote control design (in so many respects). In particular, the fact that the remote control is very sensitive to position - ours won't work if you point it directly at the DVDR80 (it only works effectively if we point it at the white ceiling and let the recorder pick up the reflection!) - coupled with many operations taking several seconds before anything visually changes (so you don't know whether the recorder actually received the command or not) is amazingly frustrating. There is a "command received" indicator on the unit, which is effectively invisible with the unit more than a couple of feet away and so no help.
Probably the single worst feature, however, is ">>"/"<<" and chapter forward/backwards being combined into two buttons (you hold chapter forwards for several seconds and it switches to ">>") - we have wasted literally hours scanning forwards or backwards after the unit did a chapter skip when we wanted ">>" or "<<". Other problems include the lack of lettering on the number buttons (these are the fastest way to enter titles, but this is apparently undocumented and the remote control buttons don't therefore have the letters printed). Etc.
Of the remaining irritations with the unit, probably the next worst is the inaccuracy in frame positioning, particularly when setting chapter marks or dividing titles. For general home use, it doesn't matter that the chapter mark (or title division) can be several seconds away from where you wanted it; if you're actually trying to produce professional looking recordings, it is frustratingly, and even sometimes unusably, inaccurate.

So, if you're looking for a replacement for a VCR, you'd have to look hard to find a better unit (particularly if you're looking for a replacement for a Philips VCR). If frustrating user interfaces bother you, or you're looking to have precise control over the recordings, look elsewhere. Particularly if you're used to the ease of use of systems such as "Sky+", try the unit before you buy, as otherwise you may be badly disappointed. We're still giving the unit 4 stars though (the overall quality of the disks produced is superb).

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect, 14 Jan 2004
After returning my DVDR880 turkey, Philips replaced it with the brilliant DVDR80. I record off my Sky tuner via the RGB in and it's awesome quality. Here's a few tips : make it region-free by borrowing a "One for All" remote, codes are on the Net. Then always upgrade the internal software, downloaded free from Philips website. Handy hint! You can eject the DVD by holding down the STOP button on remote. Plays SVCDs without a hitch, but can be a little fussy playing DVD+R movies made on PC with DVD-Shrink. The firewire input is the icing on the cake!
