Amazon.co.uk Review
John Hughes's popular 1985 teen drama finds a diverse group of high school students--a jock (Emilio Estevez), a metalhead (Judd Nelson), a weirdo (Ally Sheedy), a princess (Molly Ringwald), and a nerd (Anthony Michael Hall)--sharing a Saturday in detention at their high school for one minor infraction or another. Over the course of a day, they talk through the social barriers that ordinarily keep them apart, and new alliances are born, though not without a lot of pain first. Hughes (Ferris Bueller's Day Off), who wrote and directed, is heavy on dialogue but he also thoughtfully refreshes the look of the film every few minutes with different settings and original viewpoints on action. The movie deals with such fundamentals as the human tendency toward bias and hurting the weak, and because the characters are caught somewhere between childhood and adulthood, it's easy to get emotionally involved in hope for their redemption. Preteen and teenage kids love this film, incidentally. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars MY FAVOURITE FILM OF ALL TIME, 9 Sep 2000
By ShyGirl "ShyGirl" (Dublin, Ireland) - See all my reviews
This is my favourite film ever. I can't quite say why as there are too many reasons. I thought Judd Nelson was particularly great as was Emilio Estevez. However that is not to detract from the other great performances by Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy, Anthony Michael Hall, John Kapelos and Paul Gleason. When I tell people that its about 5 students in detention they just look at me but its the journey we take with Alison, Andy, Bender, Brian and Claire that makes it so superb. If this teaches us anything its that people have problems no matter how blessed you think they are. I liked this whole era of films such as St Elmo's Fire, Pretty in Pink etc and while other viewers find it brings back memories of the 80's I am enjoying these films as a 90's viewer. If I had to summarise The Breakfast Club in three words it would be superb, brilliant and excellent. To anyone reading this who hasn't seen the film buy it now you won't regret it.

I also liked Vernon being analysed by Karl who tells him that he only took a teaching position cos he thought it would be easy. "Then you found that it was actually work and that really bummed you out" However my favourite line is too hard to choose as 10 or 11 spring to mind immediately. It is not an exageration to say I have watched it about 100 times and will never get sick of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Peerless, 31 Jul 2000
By A Customer
I couldn't agree more with the rest of the reviewers here; The Breakfast Club is a true classic. Starting in decidedly comical mode, the course of The Breakfast Club is that of a gradual tangent, leading the viewer slowly and unexpectedly into the minds of the protagonists. The films resonance lies in the perfect synchrony between the performances, which are truly first rate (especially Anthony Michael-Hall as nerd Brian, and Molly Ringwald as the spoilt beauty-queen Claire), and the script, by also-director John Hughes, which is both sharp, funny, and incredibly affecting, a departure from many of his slushier/more superficial creations. It's interesting that though the 80s as a decade is frequently derided for it's meretriciousness, films such as The Breakfast Club are far more provocative and meaningful, and will last far longer in the minds of viewers than today's teen-audience equivalents (American Pie, Clueless et al). A timeless piece of film, and very evocative of a unique period.

5.0 out of 5 stars dont mess with the bull young man, 7 Nov 2004
This is an excellent film, i watched it as part of an english project and i just fell in love with it. That was in 2000 and im still not bored. i have to say that judd nelson is so beautiful and he is by far my favourite character. People think that im crazy for liking a film about 5 kids in detention but all i do is tell them to watch for themselves, it's brilliant.
