Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

As his alter-ego, "Kid Koala", might suggest, Eric San applies a joyous childlike vision to his music on Some of My Best Friends Are DJs. Following turns with Money Mark, Deltron 3030 and Lovage, Canada's cheekiest mixologist defied weighty expectations with his beguiling debut album, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Three years later, and Kid Koala has retained his youthful verve. Packaged with a 52-page, self-penned comic and a travel chess kit, Some of My Best Friends Are DJs offers less in the way of music, with the 35-minute running time meaning the restless sonic snippets wisely end before his humour has a chance to grate.

Mixing sleazy whisky-bar vibes with adolescent antics, his second album never allows the listener to settle. Moments of playful mixing magic are at times followed by baffling inanity as "Skanky Panky"--with its wonderfully shattered Ska rhythm and frantic scratches--runs into "Flu Season", ostensibly a series of beat-accompanied coughs, sneezes and sniffs. Blending blues, jazz and funk with a myriad of bizarre samples, moments of pure eccentric genius such as "Robochacha" and "More Dance Music" make this a flawed yet fascinating slice of beat-driven bravura. --Christopher Barrett

The Times, Feature 28th Nov 2003

One of the worlds leading scratch DJ’s, San creates emotional melodic music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strange but totally awesome, 20 Feb 2005
By Andrew (england) - See all my reviews
If you like listening to cool turntabilism this is for you, it has some funky songs on the album such as 'more dance music', if you like other artists such as rjd2 i am quite sure you will like this although it did take a few times listening to it to truely get me into it, it is a weird album and sadly it is quite short but it is a cd to purchase even for the cool casing, but i can asure you you will enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Koalas pushing the boundaries of turntablism!, 28 Nov 2003
By A Customer
Kid Koala, or Eric San is out in his own stratosphere in terms of creative turntabblism. Really you have to see the man live to really experience his skills, he can pick out a melody by moving the needle. All this without any headphones! This albums highlight is the track 'Skanky Panky' i have already dropped this in a ska set to wondeful applause. This is hip hop however, and not like any hip hop ive ever heard. It is forward thinking and affectionate, part lemon jelly part Dj Shadow for the populists. This is Ska, Funk, and Jazz Breaks. This is one warped record.
Another landmark in the progression of turntablism. This is music to take pleasure in, grin to and enjoy

4.0 out of 5 stars KOALA'S EAT SHOOT AND LEAVE, 10 Oct 2003
By A Customer
Kid Koala is back with the 2nd or indeed 3rd installment from his twisted cartoon world of nufonia. If you thought carpal tunnel syndrome was good then this some of my best freinds are DJ's is better. Slightly short for my liking but packed to the hilt with his usual blend of sampled scratching madness ! this album is worth buying purly for the fact that you get a conmic as well as a travel chess set with which to amuse yourself whilst your brain tries to comprehend what it is hearing...Buy it you'll like it !!!
