Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Cricket. Love it or hate it, there's no denying its appeal: sunshine, relaxation, tea breaks. It's all here in EA Sports' comprehensive new simulation, Cricket 2004 (pretty much, anyway). Typically, EA's sporting simulations are detailed facsimiles of the real-life players and events they portray. Cricket 2004 is no exception to this admirable rule. Some 61 cricket grounds from across the globe are accurately depicted here, along with 56 teams. Everything is bang up to date, of course, but the game's impressive Player Editor feature ensures that users can--if they wish to maintain realism--change information as time goes on.

Cricket has the uncanny ability of making time pass slowly. Here, for those who wish to re-invest that warped time wisely, EA bowls several cricket events: the World Cup appears alongside two domestic Australian cup competitions, numerous international tours, one-day tests, and the English County Championships. There's something for fans of every leaning. The action is delivered with aplomb. Sharp visuals, combined with TV-style camera angles and live commentary from Messrs Benaud and Maxwell (the modern-day voices of televised cricket), complete what is the definitive video game for cricket fans. --Jonti Davies

Manufacturer's Description

As well as all of the international teams and bonus squads, EA Sports' Cricket 2004 includes domestic teams and competitions from England, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Test matches as well as One-day Internationals are also included, and in addition to the tournaments that you have come to know and love from EA Sports' Cricket, the Master League will also be a highlight of this game.

With new motion capture and a new development platform, not to mention the inclusion of form and injury, gameplay is more true to life than ever before. And for the cricketing buff there's no end to the detail. A large variety of statistical graphs will be available including run rate and wagon wheel graphs, as well as a huge amount of statistical data on every player that tracks over the course of a tournament. The game revolves around a full TV style presentation including a full action replay mode, third umpire, animated ducks, TV style overlays, field position editor and much more. The field position editor allows for auto or manual fielding.

Over 75 stadia are modeled from all over the world, including Lords in England, Calcutta, Melbourne, Auckland, Cape Town, Barbados and Lahore; the detail in the stadia is amazing. Lighting and shadows of the highest grade together with real time weather all add to the authenticity of the playing experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars An unbiased review from someone who owns the game, 16 Mar 2004
In short, this is a great effort, a tenfold improvement on Cricket 2002. However, it lacks the polish of higher profile EA titles.

Negatives:
- Clumsy graphics, comparable to Rugby 2004
- Some unrealistic animations, especially amongst close fielders.
- Long loading times
- Massive memory card requirement(nearly 4mb)
- Terrible commentary

Positives
- The disciplines required to be successful here are similar to real cricket. eg. When bowling, if you put the ball in the right place again and again, you're more likely to tempt a nick to slips.
- The performamce of the batsman is now contributed to by a confidence meter. He's more likely to be successful with attacking shots if he's played himself in, and his confidence is high.
- Wide range of modes.....I'm in the middle of a carribean tour at the moment, but for a bit of light releif, I might play a quick C & G Trophy session to practice my six hitting!

Without doubt, this is the best cricket game on the market, and would have merited 5 stars if gameplay was the only measure.

Wholeheartedly recommended for cricket fans, be it for the 10+ match Ashes tour, or the 10 over per side multiplayer blast.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Improvement, 16 Mar 2004
since cricket 2002, which admittedly was good for when it was released but got boring after a while, this game has many improvements from it. I'll just say now that i would give it 4.5 but as you can't.....
Anyway, the new features on it are full English and Australian, County and State teams, which you can play full seasons in, for instance thats the frizzell county championship (4 day matches) the Cheltnham and Gloucester cup (50 over matches) and the Nation league (45 over matches) and then the Aussie version. There are also on the now expected from sport game updates, much improved graphics and I was glad, and I'm sure many others will be that in this game, unlike cricket 2002, they don't run like spackers!!!
There is now a game mode called foreign tour, which is rather self explainatery, but if you win win the series and tour matches, you win the trophey which subsequently is placed in your trophy cabinet. Now after you hit a four or six, you will get a good action reply as the shots are fantasticly real.
The only negative I can find is that the "intellegent" commentry wears off after a while and it get a tad boring, but you can expect that I suppose.
If you have the original this is a must-buy, but still goood to people who haven't but, if you hate cricket, stay away, far away from this!

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than the original!, 1 Dec 2003
By DukeOfManhattan (Northamptonshire, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
HB studios return with the new improved Cricket 2004 for the PS2.
Here is my summary of the game:-

GOOD POINTS:-
=============
+ New Renderware graphics engine (as used in Burnout 2, GTA: Vice City and Pro Evolution Soccer)
+ More detailed graphics and animation mean more realism.
+ New motion capture and texture mapping system.
+ 75 real stadiums from all around the world.
+ All real international teams and some (not all) domestic teams.
+ New Flexi Play mode means more interaction with fielding, bowling and batting.
+ Day/night matches are cool.

WEAK POINTS:-
=============
- Shame they still could not include all the domestic teams
- No online play confirmed yet
- AI can be very frustrating, even in easy
- Super fielders can annoy

OVERALL:- A definate improvement over the original game, but still not the complete article. But a definate must purchase for all cricket fans. Others should rent first.
