This 1982 slasher [aka: The Dorm That Dripped Blood, aka: Death Dorm, aka: Beyond Terror] documents four college students who stay on campus over the Christmas holiday in order to earn some cash, clearing out a dormitory which is due for demolition but are stalked by an unknown serial killer.
Full of speckles and a dodgy soundtrack, this is low budget even for the 1980s, but it all adds to the eerie atmosphere, there’s even a ‘jaws’ type music score in places. With plenty of ‘through the eyes of the stalker’ shots and dramatic sound effects, this has plenty of tense moments, false leads and screams galore while there are three deaths in the first 15 minutes or so!
The single disc offers play, scene selection, gallery [20 random stills], trailers [x3] and filmographies [x3]. Notable in the UK to have made the infamous ‘video nasty’ list, now it’s probably most notable for being the debut of Daphne Zuniga [Melrose Place]. There is some generally mild swearing, one topless nude scene and a few gory moments, including some mutilated corpses, but the gore is unlikely to please modern ‘hack n slash’ fans as it’s mainly the suspense and tension that delivers the scare, although there are some ‘jump out’ moments. If you like low budget 70s and 80s movies, you’ll probably love this, especially the must see ending –which has since been copied, but if you hate ‘B’ movies and hammy acting, then this might not work for you. For me it’s a great late night Tv horror, but ultimately it’s another love it or loath it movie.

A group of college student volunteer go to an old abandoned building over Christmas in order to prepare it for demolition, but a killer has also gone with them and is stalking them one by one.

Average early 80's slasher but with a good fun climax. Debut for directing partners Carpenter & Obrow, they do a good job with the material, it isn't very scary, suspense is minimal, but they do keep up the pace and the ending is a decent twist . Acting wise passable is about where we are here, Daphne Zuniga debuts in this but she doesn't last long unfortunately, none of the characters/actors really stand out although Laurie Lapinski is OK at the end. There good gore scene where a drill is used, in fact most of the effects aren't bad but they just don't quite stand out enough like the whole film.

The hand slicing & drill sequences are most probably the reasons why this was a video nasty and it remains cut by 10 seconds to this day. Watchable while its on but almost instantly forgettable, notoriety keeps this one alive (and a mention in Scream), not really much of a cult classic.

I currently get sent a Vipco horror film through the post every three weeks, and I make an effort to review every one of them as horror films are my main passion. Most of the Vipco films I've acquired are absolute rubbish, but I only buy them as they are the films that the government did not want us to watch in the eighties.
PRANKS is rubbish, pure and simple. There is a very loose plot that allows for the killing of various teenagers. That's it in a nutshell, pure and simple.
As for most cheap slasher films, the acting in PRANKS is pretty terrible. Also, for a Vipco label, the gore in the film is actually quite tame, and most hardcore horror fans won't even flinch when they see one of the teenagers get picked off.
Of course, the essential slasher movie to recommend is HALLOWEEN, but THE BURNING also makes excellent viewing, being one of the best films produced by the VIPCO label.
But give this turkey a miss.

Avoid this bootleg copy of an original 80's slasher. Its not the real deal. Public Domain, maybe, unwatchable... almost! Quite possibly a real prank!

Considering that this 1981 feature was made fairly early in the 80's slasher craze, one boggles at how inept it is. Over here in the States this dull time-waster is known as "The Dorm That Dripped Blood," and the title is the best thing about the flick. It's a pretty standard story. 5 college kids have been hired to close down a condemned dormitory over the Christmas break. Needless to say, it isn't long before they start disappearing one by one. It is often said that the acting is awful, but you really can't hold that against it since Oscar-calibur performances have never been the strong point of this genre. But everyone in the picture appears as if they would rather be doing something else. The script is completely mindless, especially in the opening scene in which a boy is killed for no reason at all. Co-directors/writers Jeffrey Obrow and Stephen Carpenter seem to really enjoy showing sadistic murders. The film was shot in gloomy darkness and it is almost impossible to see the action in some of the scenes (having said this, I will admit that I have only seen two video copies on seperate labels, not this disc). The movie simply becomes repetitive after awhile, and you want to scream at the characters for their stupidity. How long before these morons learn that the quickest way to die is to go walking around the dark hallways by yourself? You also have to wonder how the film could be so bad considering all of the effort that Carpenter and Obrow put into it. In addition to writing and directing, they also did the editing, and Obrow was the producer. If you really want to see a slasher film, go watch "Halloween" again. Carpenter and Obrow would later go on to make the far superior fright flick "The Kindred."
