Album Description
This is the second sacred cantata by Armando Pierucci setting texts by acclaimed Russian poet Regina Derieva. Its relatively dark tones, matching chamber choir to string quartet, reflect the subject matter, of suffering and death, but also the joy of coming resurrection and glory. The CD also contains two organ works by Pierucci, palyed by the composer. A fine work for adventurous choral societies to tackle, as it is written in traditional tonal language.
About the Artist
The Chamber Chorus "Aidija" of Vilnius, Lithuania, was formed in 1989. Today it is one of the most outstanding amateur choirs in the country. The chorus of some 28 singers is made up of students and graduated of the Lithuanian Academy of Music, and - to a small extent - of young people between the ages of 17 and 30 from other universities. In recent years "Aidija" has given about 300 concerts, including several tours of Lithuania, and also in England, Belarus, Poland, Moldova, France, Finland, Ukraine and Germany. They scored success by winning first prize in choral competitions in England (1992) and Wales (1994). They have also taken part in a number of international festivals. The chorus has gained awards from "Krantai" magazine and the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture.
The Quartet made its debut in 1965, and began intensive work in 1968. In 1972 it was awarded the highest prize in the international string quartet competition in Lieges, Belgium, being renamed after Lithuania's capital city the following year.
The quartet has toured in over 30 countries, and has given over 2500 concerts. Currently (2003) it is performing around 80 concerts per year, in Europe, Africa, Central And South America and Asia, including many major festivals, and is drawing international praise for its technique and interpretation skills.
The Vilnius String Quartet has a vast repertoire of over 400 works, including all the classics, but also over 100 works by contemporary composers, many of which have been written especially for them. The quartet is in high demand owing to its high artistry, and has recorded over 30 albums around the world. On this CD, the quartet is augmented by Giedrius Gelgotas (flute) and Gintautas Jocius (double bass).
